Xiaomi’s YU7 Electric Vehicle Ignites Record-Breaking Demand
In a remarkable display of market enthusiasm, Xiaomi reported receiving 289,000 preorders for its upcoming YU7 electric vehicle within just one hour of its launch presentation. This figure surged to nearly 240,00 *strong>lock-in orders* secured within the initial 18 hours following the reveal.
The company’s manufacturing capacity is currently focused at its single Beijing plant complex, strategically divided between two operational sections (Fases). The primary factory section (Fase 1) covers an expansive space of approximately 720,000 square meters. Construction began in April 2022 and was completed significantly ahead of schedule, ending in June 2023 – a construction period spanning just 14 months.
Mass production on Fase 1 commenced in March 2024 after the SU7 sedan’s launch. This initial phase boasts an annual manufacturing capacity sufficient for producing up to 150,000 vehicles per year.
The plant expansion continues with Fase 2 (commenced July 2024), occupying a slightly smaller land footprint of around 531,000 square meters. The project is currently scheduled for completion by June 2025 and aims to add another production line capable of handling an additional annual output.
According to the report, the first batch of YU7 vehicles for showrooms has been manufactured at Fase 1, despite some initial testing units also being produced there before July’s planned shift in main assembly operations. The significant volume of orders placed during this period (the lock-in phase) primarily suggests that these reservations represent supply commitments extending into early 2026.
The challenge now lies in balancing production capacity between the YU7 and its existing SU7 model without compromising quality or delivery timelines, all while managing market expectations for both vehicles.
