Collaborating with Hyundai and German design students from Munich’s College of Applied Sciences, Honda’s latest concept, the OBSIDIAN electric sedan, masterfully blends the sleekness of the Honda 0 Saloon, the futuristic allure of Tesla Cybertruck, and the boldness of Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi epics – I am thoroughly captivated by this innovative fusion!
While there may be some creative similarities between designs, the brand-new Hyundai Obsidian concept has undoubtedly been crafted with innovation and originality in mind? While it may seem like an edgier, extra aggressive competitor to both the Honda Civic Sedan and the second-generation Tesla Model 3 you’d expect to see if the Cybertruck hadn’t been a flop; however, that’s okay.
The square-segmented “pixel-type” LED ambient bar successfully captures the essence of the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Grandeur sedan concepts, imbuing it with a distinctively Hyundai character – a feat that was previously unachievable for any Hyundai model just a few years ago. Despite their best efforts, these cars consistently looked like unoriginal, run-of-the-mill versions of something else.
Not so, anymore.
As of 2018, every new Hyundai or Kia model has been a home run, and the Obsidian edition continues this trend with its unique feature: opaque, red-tinted window panels that evoke a sense of luxury and exclusivity, like an A-list celebrity trying to avoid the paparazzi.
Although there’s no official word yet on any type of manufacturing plans or whether the OBSIDIAN concept will kickstart a new design era for Hyundai’s upcoming design division, sources suggest that Hyundai executives are genuinely enamored with the OBSIDIAN idea.
At the prestigious @cardesignevent, a bold design declaration was made among esteemed automotive designers and students from around the world. Last year, a design scholar at Munich University revealed a vision for the automotive future: the Hyundai Obsidian.
It’s expected to arrive looking absolutely stunning.

The corporation’s partnership with Anders underscores the brand’s commitment to cultivating emerging talent and pushing innovative boundaries in automotive design.
