Hyundai’s most affordable electric vehicle is now available for purchase in Japan. At an initial price of just $18,000, the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV stands out as the most affordable electric vehicle in its class, undercutting even BYD’s budget-friendly Dolphin model.

Hyundai’s most affordable all-electric vehicle, the Kona Electric, is now available in Japan.

Since its market re-entry in early 2022, Hyundai has exclusively introduced several vehicles to Japan’s market, including the IONIQ 5, Kona Electric, and Nexo Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).

The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s fourth electric vehicle, poised to become its biggest success yet. In Japan, Hyundai started taking orders for its newest electric vehicle on Friday. Starting at a price point of approximately $25,000, equivalent to 3,143,000 yen, the Ioniq Electric is Hyundai’s most affordable electric vehicle currently available on the market.

Hyundai debuted the Intruder for the first time at the Busan Mobility Showcase in Korea last summer. The new technology is currently being rolled out across Europe and South Korea.

The Inster, also known as the Casper Electric, has become one of Korea’s best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) in its home market.

Equipped with a 49 kWh battery, the Inster boasts an impressive range of up to 195 miles (315 km) on a single charge, making it an attractive option for Korean drivers. Across Europe, the Casper Electric is anticipated to achieve a distance of up to 221 miles (355 km) under WLTP conditions. The affordable electric vehicle (EV) features battery capacities of either 42 kWh or 49 kWh when purchased in Japan.

In Japan, customers can choose from three trim levels, priced between ¥2,849,000 (approximately $18,000) and ¥3,575,000 (around $22,700).

At approximately 3.83 meters in length, 1.61 meters in width, and 1.62 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.58 meters, the Inster EV is only slightly smaller than BYD’s Dolphin (4.29 meters long, 1.77 meters wide, 1.57 meters tall, with a wheelbase of 2.7 meters).

Hyundai’s newest electric vehicle has launched, undercutting the Toyota Dolphin, which starts at around $24,500 (approximately ¥3.63 million), making it one of Japan’s most affordable electric cars.

The launch of a budget-friendly electric vehicle is expected to boost Hyundai’s market share in the region. Last year, Hyundai acquired just under 600 vehicles in Japan, while BYD purchased more than 2,200. Since its entry into the Japanese market in 2023, BYD has successfully introduced a range of best-selling electric vehicles (EVs), including the Dolphin and Atto 3 SUV, as well as the popular Seal model.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5: A Trim-by-Trim Analysis for Japanese Buyers

In the competitive Japanese market, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers a compelling case with its impressive range, sleek design, and advanced features. But which trim is best suited for you? Let’s dive into the details to find out.

**Basic**: The base model starts at ¥2,915,000, offering a decent balance between price and features. You get a 62 kWh battery, 168 horsepower, and a range of approximately 300 km on a single charge. It’s a great entry point for those looking to dip their toes into the world of EVs.

**Premium**: The Premium trim adds ¥150,000 to the base model’s price tag, bumping it up to ¥3,065,000. For that extra cost, you gain 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support. It’s an excellent choice for those who value aesthetics and comfort.

**Limited**: This trim is where things get interesting, priced at ¥3,315,000. The Limited adds unique exterior design elements like a distinctive grille and special badging. Inside, you’ll find premium leather seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and a panoramic sunroof. It’s the perfect choice for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

**First Edition**: For ¥3,665,000, the First Edition trim offers an exclusive package of features, including unique interior trim, special badging, and priority service at Hyundai dealerships. It’s a great option for early adopters or those looking for a truly one-of-a-kind driving experience.

Ultimately, the right trim for you will depend on your priorities: range, comfort, style, or exclusivity. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an excellent choice regardless of which trim you choose, offering unbeatable value in the Japanese market.

Hyundai’s latest electric vehicle is poised to rival Japan’s top-selling electric car, the Nissan Sakura, priced at around $16,500 (¥2.6 million).
