Hyundai has announced that its all-solid-state battery technology is expected to debut in production vehicles by 2025.

In June, Hyundai Motor’s Chief Executive Officer Chang Jae-hoon announced a substantial investment of $7.3 billion, equivalent to 9.5 trillion won, to accelerate the development of electric vehicle batteries over the next decade.

Hyundai aims to diversify its electric vehicle battery portfolio by developing multiple types, including lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP), nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and all-solid-state batteries, to cater to various market segments. According to sources familiar with the development, Hyundai’s all-solid-state EV battery technology is poised to reach a significant breakthrough.

By December 23, industry insiders reported that Hyundai had almost finished constructing a demonstration production line for all-solid-state batteries.

A spokesperson for the venture revealed that the equipment for personalized products is largely booked up. Solely the logistics automation portion stays?

Hyundai aims to initiate testing of electric vehicles equipped with advanced all-solid-state battery technology by 2025. By the end of the last decade, mass manufacturing is poised to commence.

The manufacturing line is at Hyundai’s Uiwang Analysis & Improvement Heart in Korea. South Korean automaker Hyundai has established 22 collaborative research projects across four key divisions, focusing on the development of innovative energy storage solutions, including lithium metal batteries, solid-state batteries, advanced battery management systems, and cutting-edge battery processing technology. Among them, 14 could potentially relate to the development of lithium-metallic and solid-state battery technologies.

In September, Hyundai and Kia announced a collaborative effort to pioneer the development of a precursor material for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cathodes, paving the way for more affordable electric vehicle models in their future product lineup. Hyundai aims to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries that the company has successfully developed in-house, with a planned rollout for 2025.

Honda revealed an all-solid-state battery demonstration manufacturing line just last month. Honda intends to debut electric vehicles (EVs) fueled by its innovative battery technology by 2030.

Factorial, a pioneer in the field of energy storage, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by scaling its “Solstice” all-solid-state battery cells to 40Ah capability, in partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Factorial boasts that its innovative battery technology boasts a breakthrough power density of up to 450 watt-hours per kilogram, enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to potentially cover an astonishing 80% more distance – equivalent to approximately 600 miles.

Electrek’s Take

As the prospect of unlocking faster charging times and higher energy storage capacity gains momentum, numerous automakers and companies are racing to pioneer the development of all-solid-state EV batteries.

Global leaders in battery technology, such as Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), BYD, and Samsung SDI, are driving innovation alongside major automakers like Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai. Despite progress on security and manufacturing challenges persisting as key concerns.

According to the latest statistics, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has maintained its position as the global leader in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, boasting a significant 36.8% market share for the first ten months of 2024. With a market share of 16.8%, BYD took the second spot, while LG Power from South Korea came in third with an 11.8% share.
