After a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) probe into instances where the Tesla Model Y’s steering wheel detached, Nissan is now addressing a similar issue. The Japanese automaker is issuing a recall affecting more than 1,000 units of its Ariya electric sport utility vehicle due to a critical issue where the steering wheel can potentially become detached from the steering column.

A notice of urgency: 2023 Nissan Ariya Electric SUV Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a safety concern with the 2023 Tesla Model Y, following two reported incidents where the steering wheel detached completely from the vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that certain vehicles were equipped with a type of “end-of-line restore” procedure, which necessitated the removal and subsequent reinstallation of the steering wheel to resolve an issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is collaborating with Tesla to determine whether additional vehicles may be impacted by the issue, and if a recall is warranted.

Nissan has recently faced a recall issue stemming from its steering wheels. Following a notification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan has issued a recall affecting 1,063 Ariya electric vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall affecting certain 2023 Nissan Ariya electric vehicles, citing concerns that the steering wheel may not have been properly secured during production.

Due to these factors, the letter explicitly declares:

If a steering wheel is equipped with a loose or missing bolt, it may detach from the steering column, thereby compromising steering control and increasing the risk of an accident?

Nissan identified two instances of faulty steering wheels between January 30 and February 8, 2023, prompting an immediate “seller quality movement” to inspect 418 Ariya vehicles, ultimately uncovering another issue.

In a proactive move, Nissan decided to initiate a voluntary recall affecting more than 1,000 vehicles to address the problem at hand.

Nissan is advising owners of its Ariya electric vehicle (EV) to consult with dealerships about transportation options and a prompt repair if the steering wheel exhibits excessive play when rocked back and forth.

Nissan dealerships will undertake a complimentary steering wheel bolt replacement as part of a voluntary recall, designated by campaign number PC956, without any additional costs or labor fees associated. Homeowners seeking additional information can reach out to Nissan’s dedicated customer support line and personally request assistance.
