CATL launches new Bedrock skateboard chassis

On December 24, Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) officially unveiled its innovative Bedrock skateboard chassis. The debut of a novel Avatr model heralded the potential for its collaboration with another brand to create a pioneering automotive.

At the press conference, CALT emphasized the enhanced security features and optimized performance capabilities of its innovative bedrock skateboard chassis. The aircraft boasts a remarkable cruising range exceeding 1,000 kilometres. The CatL responds to the Bedrock chassis, a ultra-high protection flagship version of the CIIC, as illustrated in the accompanying slide presentation.

To ensure robust security, CATL is focusing on three key areas: chassis design, high-performance battery cell development, and advanced voltage management systems. The Chinese battery giant CATL recently released a striking video showcasing the results of a simulated frontal collision between a sedan traveling at 120 km/h and a solid barrier, designed to demonstrate the safety features of its high-performance lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles? Isn’t it well-known that within the current C-NCAP test, this type of crash is simulated at a speed of 56 kilometers per hour? As a result, a 120 km/h frontal or side-on impact has significantly amplified the crashworthiness by a factor of 4.6 times.

The passenger compartment of the automobile emerged remarkably unharmed. There was no fireplace or explosion, what’s more crucially important.

To achieve optimal performance, the automotive designers have incorporated a carefully crafted layout of the vehicle’s physical structure and battery system, featuring multiple pathways to reduce the speed of chassis invasion. Combining 2000 MPA hot-stamped steel with 600 MPA aluminum alloys optimizes the passive security performance of building constructions.

To mitigate the impact of collisions and reduce deformation of battery cells, they are designed with an ultra-high-strength insulation film optimized for optimal performance. While this design reduces the likelihood of thermal runaway, in the event that it occurs, gases released from underneath can be easily vented to cool surrounding components and mitigate the risk of overheating.

Upon occurrence of a collision, the high-voltage circuit is promptly de-energized within 0.01 seconds, while any residual energy is safely dissipated within 0.2 seconds, significantly reducing the likelihood of fires or explosions ensuing from the incident.

The core powertrain, brake-by-wire technology, steering system, suspension mechanisms, and three electric motor modules are seamlessly integrated onto a single skateboard platform. CATL claims it can integrate seamlessly with advanced autonomous driving technologies, combining stage three and stage four driver assistance features to create a more intuitive and safer driving experience. Meanwhile, the canyon’s varied topography can extend more than 1,000 kilometers in length.

The implementation of a skateboard-style chassis enables a significant reduction in the overall event cycle time for its constituent parts. The hastened pace of fashion trends has a ripple effect on event timing, allowing for the swift introduction of a new model to production within 12-18 months.

Claiming a “battery-centric design” enables the chassis to seamlessly integrate with CATL’s cutting-edge fourth-generation cell-to-chassis technology. This feature enhances structural integrity while potentially reducing the weight and bulk of the battery packs.

The press conference unveiled the groundbreaking news that Avatar will pioneer the use of the innovative Bedrock skateboard chassis as its primary model. The latest iteration of this vehicle has been officially introduced as the all-new N Plus model. Little consideration is typically given to this automobile beyond the fact that it will utilize Bedrock technology, energy management, and smart innovation, as per a slide.

The brand-new automobile is expected to make its debut in the second half of 2025. It’s well-known that this latest car model is not the first to utilize a CATL chassis skateboard. In early reports, it was revealed that an 800V variant of the Neta S wagon would utilize this innovative chassis design. Despite challenges, the car’s prospects for success are hampered by Neta’s persistent financial difficulties.

At a recent press conference, CALT and Autair hinted at closer collaboration in the future. CATL is the second-largest shareholder in the Avatr model, holding a significant 14.1% stake. As the largest shareholder, Changan holds a significant stake of 41% in the company.
