Initially dubbed Quantum upon its launch in 2021, Pepo renamed the venture DNF – short for “Do Not End” – due to complications with its Dutch partner. A poignant irony has befallen the bicycle, leaving it incomplete and in need of final assembly; still, its framework warrants closer inspection.
Pepo, a renowned frame builder, received an unusual request from the owner of the Monster 900: design a lightweight motorcycle capable of conquering the notorious Nürburgring circuit in Germany. However, its performance wasn’t just about achieving effectiveness; it also had to serve as a benchmark for his peers to admire and aspire to. To meet his client’s requirements, Pepo developed a plan to design and build a custom motorcycle that would exactly match their needs.
The inspiration behind this project was a Supertwin motorcycle designed specifically for long-distance racing, as he reveals. The design’s inspiration stemmed from the RAD 02 race bike I meticulously crafted during my tenure with Radical Ducati.
The Monster 900’s iconic Desmodronic L-twin engine has undergone a thorough and meticulous examination. Within the newly refined components of this engine, you’ll uncover upgraded ported cylinder heads, high-compression pistons, a precision-crafted lightened flywheel, and a state-of-the-art anti-hopping clutch. The entire engine has undergone a thorough refurbishment, featuring reworked components such as bearings and gaskets, and meticulously blueprinted to optimize performance while ensuring uncompromising reliability. Spark comes by way of a Silent Hetkit ignition system whereas air and gasoline are managed by Ok&N pod filters and Keihin FCR 41mm carbs.
To ensure the entire system operates within protected temperature ranges, Pepo’s installed a large high-performance RC racing oil radiator at the front of the engine. While aligning with its lightweight design approach, the device features a compact and efficient lithium-polymer (LIPO) battery. The crowning touch on this innovative engine configuration is a robust 2-into-1 Wolfman exhaust, expertly capped off with a distinctive Spark megaphone muffler.
Typical of his unapologetic flair, XTR Pepo has eschewed restraint in his bold design choices. Comprising virtually all carbon fibre, the brand-new bodywork boasts a lightweight yet incredibly resilient construction. The carbonated record comprises the Endurance-styled entrance fairing, a 749 R-type impressed gasoline tank, seat pan, and rear cowl, as well as the battery field and both front and rear mudguards. The entire assembly is anchored by slender, bespoke aluminum brackets, which distribute the load evenly, while the tail unit rests securely on a newly engineered subframe designed to optimize stability.
The genuine motorcycle appearance is enhanced by the Endurance-inspired fast-filler gas tank cap, precision-machined from high-grade alloy, alongside a durable FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer) pan shield that protects the Monster’s undercarriage. The bespoke upholstery was crafted in-house by Quantum, while the striking exterior livery was entrusted to Artenruta’s skilled painters, who brought the outlandish design to life.
Although designed for urban roads, the owner’s desire to occasionally race the Monster necessitated a high-performance handling system. By installing suspension components sourced from a high-performance motorcycle like the Ducati 1098, Pepo was able to elevate its performance capabilities and handling prowess. An S&P yoke and triple clamp maintain the brand new forks in place and their efficiency has been matched by becoming a premium YSS shock within the rear.
To achieve an unfeasibly low unsprung weight, the Monster rolls on OZ Piega’s minimalist, high-strength solid-alloy wheels, shod in Continental’s finest, grippiest tires. The virtually complete brake bundle employs 330mm Discacciati floating rotors at the front, paired with a Brembo unit at the rear featuring a Brembo rear caliper and pump. The brake and clutch fluids’ reservoirs feature innovative Kevlar components from renowned manufacturer Frentubo, while the precision-crafted Dural CNC-machined rear sprocket awaits installation on the rear wheel.
Different premium elements picked out for this venture embody an Aviacomposti sprint, Koso LED flip indicators, a Louis LED brake mild, S&P clip-on bars, S&P rear set pegs, and a Domino throttle and grips. This monster has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding a staggering 40 kilograms in weight, and with a potent 80 horsepower at its disposal, it’s poised to dominate the digital landscape once its development is complete.
Regrettably, as the full scope of this arrangement becomes apparent, Pepo has placed it under review. With a lingering unpaid bill for services rendered, he’s now forced into financial limbo, his enthusiasm for completing the project irreparably snuffed out? The added pressure of being an expert has compelled him to take the difficult decision to forego taking on projects for clients. XTR can offer pre-assembled bicycles designed by Pepo himself, guaranteeing that they will be just as beautiful as this exceptional model. When a suitable buyer emerges, Quantum hopes to unveil its strategy for tackling the iconic Nürburgring circuit.
