2026 Kia Sportage hybrid, plug-in hybrid debut at LA auto show

Three years since its introduction, Kia has opted for a mid-life update of its popular Sportage compact crossover, ensuring that both hybrid and plug-in hybrid options remain available.

The all-new 2026 Kia Sportage makes its debut at the 2024 Los Angeles auto show, boasting a refreshed exterior design, including stacked LED headlights and sleek amber daytime running lights that mirror the styling cues of the larger Kia Sorento and Carnival models. It’s time for a bold new aesthetic direction to replace the familiar one that’s been part of the Sportage’s identity since its last major redesign in 2023 model year.

Hybrid fashion models now introduce two additional trim levels: S and X-Line, which boast innovative features such as a sleek, curved 12.3-inch touchscreen display. Prior to this point, solely-wired configurations were available with the larger optional display.

The latest infotainment system is just one of several cutting-edge technologies available in 2026 models. The others feature a 10.0-inch head-up display, a digital key performance that allows drivers to utilize their smartphones in lieu of traditional key fobs, and enhanced versions of Kia’s forward-collision warning system as well as Highway Driving Assist 2, a advanced highway driving support feature.

The Sportage hybrid and plug-in hybrid models employ a paired combination of a conventional 1.6-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor, which are seamlessly connected via a six-speed automatic transmission. Plug-in hybrids boast an additional high-performance electric motor and an enhanced battery pack. Outputs increase by 4 HP for the warrior, and by 7 HP for the rogue.

The standard drivetrain configuration for the hybrid variant features front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is available as an option; however, it’s a requirement for the plug-in hybrid model. The X-Line’s advanced all-wheel-drive system now features a Terrain mode for the 2026 model year, offering tailored settings for navigating challenging conditions: Snow, Mud, and Sand.

The potential impact of a minor uptick in energy prices on the overall stability of the global gasoline market remains uncertain. The Kia Sportage hybrid currently boasts an EPA-estimated rating of 38 miles per gallon in combined driving with front-wheel drive, and 36 miles per gallon when equipped with all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid is rated at an impressive 74 miles of electric range and a combined 35 miles per gallon in mixed driving conditions.

Kia anticipates its 2026 Sportage models will attain compliance with US dealerships by mid-2025, with expenses expected to follow closer to that timeline. When it launches, the refreshed Sportage will square off against the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, and their array of hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, while also competing with the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50, which offer hybrid variants but lack plug-in hybrids.
