Jaguar Land Rover, a British premium automotive brand owned by India’s Tata Motors, revealed plans in recent times to integrate electric powertrains into its entire lineup of new vehicles by 2020.

As a key component of this strategy, Land Rover is simultaneously introducing its inaugural plug-in electric vehicle: the Range Rover Sport PHEV.

The innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain boasts the following key features:

  • Peak power/torque: 404 horsepower (297 kW) / 640 Newton-meters
  • Eco-friendly driving experience: Up to 101 miles per gallon (NEDC combined cycle).
  • Mixed NEDC CO2 emissions: 64g/km
  • Electrical-only vary: 31 miles (51km)
  • Fast charging time: approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes

While a PHEV’s all-electric range of 31 miles may not pose a threat for average daily commutes, which it’s designed to accommodate, we must consider the NEDC-rated range and anticipate that the actual driving distance will likely be slightly lower than advertised.

Here’s the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain that Land Rover developed for its newest model:

While Land Rover describes its “speedy charging” as a distinct feature, it’s essentially just DC-quick charging, which is facilitated by a 32A wall-to-connector and the vehicle’s onboard 7kW charger.

Equipped with a 13.1 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, the vehicle can be fully charged in under three hours without utilizing fast-charging capabilities.

Land Rover claims that drivers have the flexibility to select between two driving modes, carefully tailored to cater to their individual preferences:

Combining petrol and electric power, the standard driving mode seamlessly blends both energy sources to optimize fuel efficiency and performance. The driving force can optimize battery costs or fuel economies by utilizing either of the two cost management features:

> SAVE operate – prevents the battery cost dropping beneath a pre-selected degree.

> Predictive Vitality Optimisation (PEO) operate – getting into a vacation spot within the navigation system permits the function, which utilises in constructed GPS altitude information for the chosen route, to intelligently mix the electrical motor and petrol engine to maximise gas economic system.

Mode allows the vehicle to operate exclusively on its electric motor, harnessing stored energy from the battery, ideal for quiet, emissions-free excursions.

Below are brief snippets offering a glimpse into the interior.

A glimpse into the world outside:

The all-new Land Rover model is now available for ordering from authorized dealerships, priced starting at £61,315 (approximately $81,400 USD).

The first step towards electrifying the Land Rover experience is taken with this inaugural venture into all-electric driving.

We’re particularly excited about the impending arrival of the I-PACE, Jaguar’s inaugural all-electric vehicle.

If the electric-powered car proves a success, as it thus far appears to be with positive reception and substantial reservations booked, it will likely embolden the British manufacturer to capitalize on the all-electric powertrain by applying it to other models in its portfolio.
