On October 26th, BYD hosted a launch event in Cambodia to unveil its latest electric pickup, the BYD Shark (locally known as the BYD Shark 6). The truck boasts a starting price of approximately $56,700 USD.
The Chinese mainland serves as the primary Asian market where the BYD Shark is in high demand. The hybrid pickup truck first premiered in Mexico last May and is soon to be introduced domestically in China. The mannequin is currently being sold in Brazil, Mexico, and Panama, with a planned launch in Australia shortly.
BYD launched the Shark 6, accompanied by its partner Concord Auto, the exclusive distributor of BYD models in Cambodia. To sweeten the deal, BYD is offering a $500 gasoline card, three years of free maintenance up to 50,000 km, a 7 kW charger, and an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for every $1,000 deposit.
During the event, BYD showcased the Shark’s Vertical Takeoff and Landing capability, which enables the vehicle to power external devices. This operation can supply power to camping gear, emergency power sources, and household appliances.
Utilizing BYD’s DMO platform, the Shark benefits from a technology that also powers the off-road focused Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and Bao 8 models. The DMO platform optimises power efficiency by allowing for genuine off-road capabilities through its ability to regulate torque distribution seamlessly between the front and rear axles.
What are the dimensions of the Shark? The vehicle measures 5457mm in length, 1971mm in width, and 1925mm in height. Its wheelbase spans 3260mm. The pickup’s payload capacity reaches up to 835 kilograms (1,841 pounds), while its cargo bed volume totals 1,450 litres (51.2 cubic feet). The Shark has a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kilograms (approximately 5,512 pounds).
The BYD Shark features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces a maximum output of 170 kilowatts. The entrance motor boasts a substantial power output of 170 kW, coupled with impressive peak torque of 310 Nm, while the rear motor delivers 150 kW and a maximum torque of 340 Nm. The mixed output for this system is 320 kilowatts and 650 Newton-meters of torque.
The electric vehicle is equipped with a 29.58-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate Blade Battery, which provides an impressive 100 kilometers of pure electric range according to New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards, as well as a total range of 840 kilometers when the battery and tank are fully charged.
Although the Shark isn’t typically available in China due to urban pickup vehicle restrictions, BYD has surprisingly launched the model in four countries with plans to expand to five by year-end. The mannequin will officially debut in Australia on October 29th, with shipments arriving by the end of this year.
