In the 2022 film ‘The Batman’, the sleek and menacing Catcycle, driven by Selina Kyle’s alter ego Catwoman, was built upon a modified BMW R nineT platform by the innovative Japanese workshop Cherry’s Firm. Indonesian workshop Smoked Storage has crafted its own unique take on the iconic Batcycle, fulfilling a local Batman enthusiast’s special request.
In contrast to merely reproducing Cherry’s R nineT, Nicko and his team delved into crafting a motorcycle that embodies the essence of the Dark Knight’s universe. Following a teardown of the customer’s 2019 model BMW R nineT, they opted for a bold cafe racer design, generously featuring a coat of matte Batman black. To achieve the R nineT’s revamped aesthetic, the first step was to design and produce custom body panels from scratch. To minimize weight while maintaining strength, Smoked has chosen a blend of in-house manufactured carbon fiber and aluminum components.
The sleek, newly designed gasoline tank boasts a lightweight carbon fiber composition, accentuated by defined contours and subtle knee-like indentations, further enhanced by a state-of-the-art CNC-machined filler cap. The tank is encased in a meticulously crafted array of alloy panels, seamlessly integrating them into a cohesive unit reminiscent of Batman’s iconic vehicle designs. A striking focal point is the entrance panel, which incorporates both the ignition barrel and neck to create a fluid connection with the surrounding bodywork. Beneath it lies a bespoke radiator ensemble, seamlessly integrated into a comprehensive set of aspect panels featuring grilles that supply the airfield.
The tail unit transforms the R nineT into a single-seater, perched atop a precisely proportioned custom subframe.
The pièce de résistance of the revamped vehicle design is undoubtedly the sleek and aerodynamically optimized entrance fairing. Most of its construction is actually made from transparent acrylic, rather than just the windshield alone. This innovative method grants the motorcycle a distinctive, helmet-visor-like appearance, making it one of the most unique entrance fairings we’ve ever encountered. Equipped with a sleek Speedo, precision-crafted mirrors, and the cutting-edge alert system from Motogadget, this motorcycle boasts an array of premium features that elevate its overall performance. The CNC-milled clip-on handlebars provide enhanced control, while the Brembo levers ensure precise braking. The pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the trick LED headlight, delivering a bright and unwavering light to illuminate even the darkest roads. The motorcycle features additional aftermarket upgrades that include diminutive Motogadget Mo-Blaze T3 tri-functional LED lights integrated into the rear section, a bespoke saddle, and high-grip rubber compounds applied to its wheels.
The engine’s efficiency remains unchanged, as the R nineT’s 1170cc flat-twin powerplant is left alone. While a pair of smoked storage mufflers may grant a slight boost in performance, the majority of the efficiency upgrades are centered on improving handling. The vehicle’s braking system features high-performance Brembo calipers at both the front and rear, providing enhanced stopping power. Although the entrance forks are considered inventory items, they do feature upgraded internals; additionally, the rear fork boasts a fully adjustable monoshock component. With these modifications combined with the weight reduction resulting from the carbon and alloy bodywork, the R nineT’s handling is undoubtedly refined.
To cap off their reworked design, the Smoked crew has meticulously finished the BMW R nineT in a sleek and ominous Dark Knight-inspired colour scheme. The predominantly matte black finish envelops a significant portion of the vehicle’s exterior, powertrain, and mechanical components. A dash of carbon’s sleekness lends an unmistakably hip vibe to the bike, while subtle silver accents evoke the Dark Knight’s arsenal.
