BYD's Yangwang U9 faces crucial Nürburgring lap test amid weather uncertainty
SHARE

As BYD’s Yangwang U9 supercar undergoes a crucial lap-time validation on the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, its performance capabilities are being put to the ultimate test. Climate challenges intensify alongside repeated rain-induced closure notices, exacerbating the engineering team’s pressure as they finalize preparations in the face of uncertainty. As dawn’s light creeps over the horizon, the team maintains a cautious optimism, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to demonstrate their U9’s prowess in more challenging circumstances.

For over six months, Yangwang has conducted thorough efficiency assessments at the renowned Nürburgring, widely regarded as the globe’s most demanding racing track. The Nürburgring is renowned for its challenging topography, dramatic elevation changes, and intricate turns. During this period, the U9 went through extensive testing, encompassing a thorough evaluation of more than 100 technical configurations and nearly 100 distinct tire combinations. With Yangwang’s cutting-edge technology fully utilized, the U9 has undergone meticulous fine-tuning to meet the high standards of both the company and its loyal followers ahead of this critical inspection.

The U9, priced at approximately $236,000 or 1.68 million yuan, is a cutting-edge electric supercar featuring a lightweight carbon fiber roof and rear diffuser designed to optimize its aerodynamic performance. Measuring 4,966 millimeters in length, the vehicle boasts a width of 2,029 millimeters, with an impressive height of 1,295 millimeters; its wheelbase spans 2,900 millimeters, while its weight tips the scales at 2,475 kilograms. The optional availability of a racing-inspired spoiler adds a sleek touch to its already track-focused design.

The U9 is propelled by BYD’s innovative e⁴ U-shaped motor system, generating a remarkable 1,680 Newton-meters of peak torque from four synchronized motors, enabling it to reach an impressive top speed of 375.12 kilometers per hour. Capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds, it also boasts an impressive 9.78-second time for the 0-400 meter sprint. The vehicle is equipped with an 80 kWh battery that yields a remarkable 450 km range when tested under the CLTC cycle, featuring rapid charging capabilities that enable a 30% to 80% recharge within just 10 minutes; meanwhile, a full and leisurely charge takes approximately 7 hours.

Equipped with the advanced DiSus-X suspension and stabilization technology, the U9 boasts exceptional agility, capable of effortlessly navigating challenging terrain, deftly switching between three-wheel drive, airborne leaps, and high-speed stunts. Yangwang’s unwavering commitment to innovative engineering is exemplified through his relentless pursuit of new frontiers in the field.

Observations indicate that four U9 prototypes have been thoroughly examined and are positioned on the T13 starting line, ready to begin today’s evaluation process. The results of this test may mark a significant benchmark in Yangwang’s development of the U9, aiming to cement its position as a premier electric supercar manufacturer.
