Toyota is issuing a recall for certain Corolla Cross Hybrid models from its initial two production years, affecting vehicles with a software issue that can cause unintended acceleration while navigating turns.

Automobiles that are expected to have defective software in their skid-control systems? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these components manage friction and regenerative braking, ensuring that they do not over-apply brake fluid pressure during cornering when the brake pedal is pressed.

Insufficient strain within the brake traces can result in significantly reduced stopping power, potentially leading to accidents or loss of control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests that drivers may experience a stiff or unresponsive accelerator pedal due to various factors, including faulty sensors and worn-out components.

According to Toyota, all vehicles affected by the recall contain the software in question. The affected software module, comprising a faulty program, originates from a supplier’s unit that equips a brake-actuator system provided by Bosch; Toyota noted that certain models feature similar actuators from the same provider, utilizing analogous software configurations. While the automaker has yet to confirm whether the same absence of braking force can occur across all variants, the investigation continues.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid was introduced in 2022 at a production facility in Alabama, jointly operated with Mazda, as part of the 2023 model year lineup, just one year following the launch of its non-hybrid counterpart. The SUV achieves a respectable 42 mpg in mixed driving conditions, closely mirroring the 48 mpg of the more aerodynamically designed Corolla Hybrid sedan when equipped with all-wheel drive.
