BYD recalls nearly 100,000 vehicles over fire risks

Byd has issued a recall affecting nearly 100,000 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect. According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the manufacturer will initiate a voluntary recall of approximately 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan Plus vehicles sold in China, commencing on September 30, 2024, due to potential fire hazards.

Chinese automaker BYD has submitted a recall plan to the State Market Regulatory Administration’s (SAMR) Faulty Product Recall Centre today. BYD’s two working entities will lead the recall process.

  • Recalling approximately 87,762 domestically produced Dolphin and Yuan Plus electric vehicles manufactured from February 4, 2023, to December 26, 2023.

  • Recalling approximately 8,952 domestically produced Yuan Plus electric vehicles manufactured from November 2, 2022, to June 19, 2023.

Due to defects in the manufacturing process of the Electrical Energy Steering Column Meeting (CEPS) controller, certain automobile models are being recalled. When the tool’s software cover is closed, it may potentially interfere with the capacitors on the controller circuit board, causing micro-cracks to develop within them. Cracks in the engine’s cylinder head can emerge over time, potentially leading to momentary electrical malfunctions, excessive heat buildup, and even catastrophic failures that may compromise safety.

To prevent potential safety risks, BYD dealers will provide insulation pads at no additional cost for controllers previously lacking this crucial feature. Notified owners of affected vehicles will receive timely notifications via registered mail, WeChat messages, and phone calls to ensure prompt awareness. BYD has also arranged a dedicated customer support hotline to assist those impacted by the recall.

BYD has historically infrequently issued recalls, but this one marks a significant exception as the largest in the company’s history to date?

BYD’s most sought-after vehicles include the BYD Dolphin and BYD Yuan Plus, also known internationally as the BYD Atto 3. Fashion items are being exported to overseas markets by BYD.
