Volkswagen gives a glimpse of the $27,000 ID.4’s interior design.

Volkswagen unveiled its ID.2all concept in March, a budget-friendly electric vehicle priced under €25,000 (approximately $27,000 USD).

Building on the innovative MEB Entry platform, Volkswagen now offers a range of affordable electric vehicle options with impressive ranges up to 450 kilometers (280 miles) under WLTP testing conditions. According to Volkswagen, the electric automobile features a “substantially environmentally friendly drive, battery, and charging technology”.

The ID.2all will be the first mass-market electric vehicle (MEB) to feature front-wheel drive, thereby broadening its application. As Andreas Mindt, Head Designer for VW Passenger Automobiles, remarks, the entry-level EV’s styling provides an early glimpse into Volkswagen’s revamped design ethos.

The most notable innovation is the redesign of the C-pillar, a concept that originated in the first-generation Golf. Volkswagen claims its new model is expected to offer the same level of interior space as the Golf while retaining the affordable pricing of the Polo.

Within its sleek exterior lies an innovative infotainment system boasting distinct volume controls. The VW ID.2all boasts a spacious cargo capacity of approximately 490 to 1,330 liters. That’s about 17.3-47 cubic toes.

Compared to other models, the Tesla Model 3 boasts a spacious cargo area of 561 litres (approximately 19.8 cubic feet) behind its second row. The maximum cargo capacity of the Mannequin 3 with five passengers onboard totals approximately 649 liters or 22.9 cubic feet. This innovative design boasts an impressive 88 liters (3.1 cubic feet) of storage space in the frunk, providing ample room for your essentials.

Mindt has recently unveiled a sneak peek at the interior of its forthcoming affordable electric vehicle (EV), as showcased through newly released images. According to VW’s lead designer, the ID 2all concept vehicle marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Volkswagen interiors.

You’ll soon have the opportunity to experience a more expansive space once again, thanks to additional storage capacity cleverly concealed beneath the floorboards. The seats can fold flat, providing additional space for storing longer items or luggage. The design chief noted that finding an abundance of storage room in a compact car, similar to the ID.2all’s unexpected discovery, is truly rare.

Minding an update, Mindt shared a revamped design for the ID 2all’s 12-inch infotainment screen and 11-inch display screens. According to recent reports, Volkswagen is seeking to revive physical buttons in its future vehicles. The latest photographs showcase features including intuitive controls for air and temperature settings.

One of the most exciting innovations is the introduction of a sleek rotary knob that effortlessly allows you to switch between driving modes. With a turn of the knob, you can switch between driving modes, including “Traditional” and “Classic.” The former evokes the iconic Beetle era, while the latter pays homage to the Golf generation.

The ID.2all is expected to be one of the first 10 new VW electric vehicles rolled out by 2026. This year, Volkswagen unveiled a trio of innovative models: the ID.3, the ID.Buzz with its stretched wheelbase, and the ID.7. Volkswagen plans to launch its production version of the ID.2 Allround (ID.2all) in 2025. Next year, the company plans to introduce a compact electric sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Volkswagen has recently unveiled its first glimpse of the forthcoming ID.2all SUV model. According to Stepan Rehak, Volkswagen’s spokesperson for design at its passenger automobile division, the vehicle is expected to hit the market in 2026.

Electrek’s Take

As the concept of an affordably priced electric vehicle gained traction, multiple automotive manufacturers subsequently unveiled similar initiatives. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to surge, industry leaders like Tesla, Hyundai, Stellantis, GM, and others are racing to develop affordable options that cater to a broader market.

While Volkswagen was among the first to indicate its departure, will it be the first to market? The German automaker has had to push back several models, including the highly anticipated Porsche Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron, due to ongoing software development delays.

Can Volkswagen deliver a genuinely affordable electric vehicle with its ID.2 all? I will assume that:
