Redwood Supplies, a leading battery recycling expert, has secured another major automotive partner in BMW of North America, further solidifying its presence in the industry. Redwood will help facilitate the recycling and responsible end-of-life management of lithium-ion batteries and associated materials from BMW Group brands, including MINI and Rolls-Royce, thereby promoting sustainability and minimizing environmental impact.

The latest partnership announcement further cements Redwood Supplies’ position as a leading authority in battery recycling. Founded in 2017 by Tesla co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, the company has achieved rapid success in developing a closed-loop economic system for producing high-quality lithium-ion batteries and recovering valuable materials like cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel.

In recent years, Redwood has secured partnerships with several prominent original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including Ford, Volkswagen Group, and Volvo. In the process, Redwood has successfully recycled the models’ batteries, giving them a second life by reselling their components and spare parts to companies such as Panasonic and Toyota, which then utilize them in electric vehicles.

The corporation excels in its field, demonstrating a certain level of proficiency. By 2023, the company had already demonstrated impressive results from its battery recycling pilot, boasting a remarkable 95% effectiveness. This achievement drew significant attention from major lenders, securing large authorities loans to support the construction of reborn EV batteries and driving the firm’s valuation to over $5 billion by September 2023.

As Redwood Supplies expands its global battery recycling footprint on two continents, the company is bolstering its customer base by adding major automotive player BMW to its roster of clients.

Redwood Materials Inc. has secured a deal to provide its battery recycling services to BMW Group and MINI in the United States. The agreement marks a significant milestone for Redwood as it aims to establish itself as a leading player in the burgeoning North American battery recycling market. Under the terms of the partnership, Redwood will be responsible for processing spent lithium-ion batteries from BMW and MINI vehicles sold in the US, with the goal of recovering valuable materials such as cobalt, nickel, and graphite. The partnership is expected to help reduce waste and support the continued growth of the electric vehicle market.

BMW of North America has announced a strategic partnership with Redwood Supplies, a collaboration that encompasses battery recycling of lithium-ion cells from all-electric, plug-in, and mild hybrid vehicles produced by BMW Group marques in the US, including MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad.

BMW announces its Redwood platform is now compatible with its network of nearly 700 locations across the US, encompassing dealerships, distribution centers, and other service providers. The specialist will facilitate the collection of retired lithium-ion batteries from BMW’s end-of-life vehicles and transport them to its facilities in Reno, Nevada, where they can be efficiently recycled and refined into valuable mineral resources. Cal Lankton, Redwood’s Chief Business Officer, discussed the recently formed collaboration with BMW.

The shift to electric vehicles offers a revolutionary opportunity to reimagine the role of batteries in powering a sustainable energy landscape. Through our collaboration with BMW of North America, we guarantee responsible management of lithium-ion batteries at end-of-life, thereby reducing their environmental impact, lowering costs, and ultimately increasing access to electric vehicles.

Redwood ensures that a minimum of 95% to 98% of the vital minerals extracted from spent batteries are successfully reclaimed and reintroduced back into the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, ultimately powering the production of new eco-friendly transportation solutions. As the electric vehicle (EV) industry continues to grow in importance for sustainable transportation, battery recycling emerges as a crucial yet developing sector, with existing supplies within EV batteries boasting an impressive capacity for infinite recyclability throughout their lifespan, ensuring that valuable materials won’t be lost.

Redwood’s recycling processes stand out as a significantly more environmentally friendly option, boasting a substantially reduced ecological impact compared to traditional mining and other recycling technologies, making them an attractive choice for those prioritizing sustainability. Redwood asserts that its recycling and refining processes significantly minimize the environmental impact of its supply chain, achieving a remarkable 80% reduction in vitality, a substantial 70% decrease in CO2 emissions, and an impressive 80% cutback in water consumption.

Redwood has previously announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art battery recycling facility in Charleston, South Carolina, situated near BMW Group’s manufacturing sites in Spartanburg and Woodruff.
