The GAC Aion R takes aim at the electric sedan market.

GAC Aion RT will take on the electric sedan market

The GAC Group unveiled its latest addition to the electric vehicle family on September 13, with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) officially confirming the name as Aion RT for this pure-electric sedan.

Prior to unveiling its product strategy, Aion had planned for the launch of a novel sedan, codenamed AY3, in August, followed by the introduction of another new model, designated as AY2, at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November. The origin of the Aion RT remains ambiguous, leaving uncertainty about its potential identity as the AY3.

The exterior of the Aion RT presents a conventional design, resembling many modern Chinese electric vehicles, featuring a rounded profile, slim headlights, and discreetly integrated door handles – hardly surprising in this segment. The charging port is located at the most prominent entrance fender.

At the rear of the vehicle, the internal illumination source for the taillight is angled to provide optimal visibility. The AION logo sits prominently at the heart of the design.

The accompanying “RT” tail label was accompanied by the revelation of two additional tail labels: “T” and “VT”. Despite being a formal requirement, the official title still necessitates GAC’s introduction. The Aion RT measures 4,865mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,520mm in height; its wheelbase spans 2,775mm, positioning it above the GAC Aion S (4,863mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,515mm high), with a slightly longer wheelbase of 2,760mm. Four curb weight options have been announced: 1,670 kilograms, 1,700 kilograms, 1,750 kilograms, and 1,780 kilograms.

The Aion RT is equipped with 215/55 R17 and 235/45 R18 tyres, offering a range of rim options to suit individual tastes.

The exterior package features a comprehensive suite of sensors, including six front radars, six rear lidars, along with a roof-mounted radar sensor for enhanced forward collision warning capabilities. Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, privacy glass, and distinctive color-matched door handles and charging port cover.

The energy source is provided by an enduring permanent magnet synchronous motor, specifically the TZ180XYXOF51 model, which offers two power options: 150 kW (201 horsepower) or 165 kW (221 horsepower), accompanied by a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack supplied by Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited. The highest recorded velocity is 163 kilometers per hour. The battery pack capabilities and related varying information will not be disclosed at this time.

In August, GAC Aion’s global sales decreased by 32% year-over-year to 35,355 vehicles, a significant drop from the 52,057 vehicles sold during the same period last year. Aion has reaffirmed its intention to introduce four fresh fashion collections by the end of 2024, staying true to its original timeline.
