Jaguar halts plan for electric E-type Zero

Jaguar has scrapped plans to introduce an electric version of its iconic E-type model, reportedly cancelling the E-type Zero project after initially announcing it in 2022.

Two decades ago, Jaguar dramatically revamped its iconic E-type by electrifying its classic design with modern electric propulsion.

The range-extending electric vehicle boasted a potent 220 kW drivetrain and a 40 kWh battery, enabling a practical real-world range of 270 km (170 miles), ideal for daily commutes.

Twelve months after its initial announcement, Jaguar unveiled a revised plan to manufacture the car as the “Jaguar E-type Zero” and leverage many components from its existing electric vehicle, the Jaguar I-PACE?

Jaguar Classic has decided to offer bespoke electric conversions for existing classic E-types, allowing proprietors of these iconic vehicles to upgrade to a fully electric variant while retaining the original car’s unique character.

Regrettably, we’ve been informed that the entire project is being put on hold.

Received a letter from Paul Hegarty, Supervisor of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, addressed to those who have shown interest in acquiring a Jaguar E-type Zero.

The supervisor’s written communication included.

As a pioneer in the field, I’m delighted to engage with you regarding my initial impressions of the groundbreaking all-electric Jaguar E-type Zero. I regret to announce that we have made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend production at our automotive facility.

Without providing a clear rationale behind his decision to cease enhancement.

While we’re committed to delivering this groundbreaking vehicle and technology to our customers in due time, our current focus is on investing in the next generation of exceptional, world-class Basic services.

While it may have some redeeming qualities, its prospects for success seem bleak.

Electrek’s Take

It is a huge bummer.

I had always been thoroughly enthused by this vehicle since its inception, not only because it’s stunningly attractive but also because I envisioned it sparking a surge in mass-market electric vehicle conversions from the manufacturer itself.

Following announcements from various automakers, there’s a growing expectation that Jaguar will move forward with its plans for the E-type Zero, despite any ongoing challenges.

There appears to be considerable potential demand for these products. You can’t go wrong when combining nostalgia and electric powertrains.
