2024 KTM 690 SMC R. (KTM/)

Overview

Initially released back in 2008, the 690 SMC shares a common platform with its stablemate, the 690 Enduro R. Flash forward to its latest iteration, the KTM 690 SMC R – a remarkable motorcycle engineered to conquer urban canyons, daily commutes, serpentine mountain routes, and adrenaline-fueled track days with equal aplomb.

The LC4 693cc SOHC single engine is common to at least five distinct motorcycle models, as well as its Enduro R counterpart, all bearing the KTM brand under the same umbrella. Equipped with liquid cooling, the motorcycle boasts an electric starter and advanced gas injection system, further customizable with the option of ride-by-wire throttle control that enables several ride modes, including Avenue or Supermoto settings. Equipped with lean-sensitive ABS and traction management, this bike also offers a non-compulsory Supermoto ABS mode that customers can opt for.

The steel trellis body, coupled with a composite subframe featuring integrated gas tank anchorage, provides a robust foundation for the overall chassis architecture. The suspension features a WP 48mm Apex fork, offering 8.5 inches of travel upfront, while the linked WP Apex shock delivers 9.4 inches of travel at the rear. The motorcycles’ tubeless spoked wheels feature a standard measurement of 17 inches at the front and rear, paired with high-quality Bridgestone S21 tires in dimensions 120/70-17 and 160/60-17 respectively. At the front, a Brembo radial-mount four-piston caliper grips a 320mm disc to deliver robust high-speed braking capabilities, while at the rear, a single-piston Brembo caliper is paired with a 240mm disc for effective slowing.
