Overview
Honda re-entered the market with the revamped CBR650F in 2014, catering to consumers seeking a high-performance bike that still exuded sophistication and refinement. Ultimately, the bike’s identity was rebranded as the CBR650R, its performance having undergone a significant boost in efficiency. By 2024, the CBR650R makes its US comeback, but this time it’s accompanied by Honda’s innovative E-Clutch technology, allowing riders to start, stop, and shift gears seamlessly using the shift lever alone, eliminating the need for clumsy clutch operation? One of the most appealing aspects of this system is its ability to allow riders to utilize the clutch as they would in a traditional setup, providing seamless integration and adaptability.
With the E-Clutch, the bike received several updates for 2024, including: modern styling that closely resembles its sportbike siblings, such as the CBR1000RR; a brand-new full-color TFT display; new backlit control clusters on the handlebars; and all-LED lighting.
A common request from customers has been for sporty engines that strike a balance between performance and everyday usability, without being solely optimized for track racing. The CBR650R’s powerful 649cc inline-four engine features dual overhead cams and 16 valves, offering a perfect blend of performance and fuel efficiency. Equipped with 32mm throttle bodies, the engine’s fuel injection system (PGM-FI) is carefully calibrated to deliver a broad spread of power suitable for everyday road use. With the introduction of the innovative E-Clutch, the mechanical component features a helpful slipper clutch that expertly manages rear-wheel lockup during rapid downshifts. The Honda Selectable Torque Management (traction control) system can be deactivated as needed.
The chassis boasts a 57-inch wheelbase, a svelte 466-pound curb weight, and an agile geometry that exudes sportiness. The up-front suspension features a Showa 41mm Separate Fork Feature – Big Piston (SFF-BP), while the rear Showa shock boasts 10-stage spring preload adjustability for enhanced ride quality and customization. At the front, a duo of radial-mounted, four-piston calipers and massive 310mm discs work in tandem with a single-piston caliper and 240mm disc (both equipped with advanced anti-lock braking system technology) to deliver exceptional stopping power.
