Chinese automotive publication Automotive Information has secured an exclusive glimpse at the production model of the upcoming Geely Galaxy E5, ahead of its formal introduction scheduled for August 3rd. The Galaxy E5 marks a milestone for Geely as its first fully electric SUV, also boasting the debut of the innovative Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate batteries in an automotive application. The all-electric Galaxy E5 aims to challenge the BYD Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) by capitalizing on its impressive efficiency, cutting-edge features, and competitive pricing strategy. Priced between ¥123,000 and ¥157,000 (approximately $17,000 to $22,000 USD), this new model aims to solidify Geely’s position in the electric vehicle market, while simultaneously intensifying competition among industry peers.
The Geely Galaxy, launched in the latter half of last year, has rapidly established a distinct identity through targeted marketing efforts, a cutting-edge website, and bespoke dealership experiences. The lineup comprises the Galaxy E8 fastback, Galaxy L6 sedan, Galaxy L7 SUV, and the recently introduced Galaxy E5 compact SUV. By 2025, the model aims to expand its portfolio to seven distinct fashion lines.
Based on our thorough examination of the Galaxy E8’s check report, we found that the Galaxy E-series appears to fall short in terms of luxury compared to Zeekr’s offerings under the Geely brand. Despite some limitations, the product still offers significant value for money, with the designers focusing on the key aspects. Let’s take to the road in our latest Galaxy E5 SUV adventure.
Our flagship automotive offering is the premium Galaxy E5, boasting a robust 530km range in its exclusive Starship Version, available for 157,000 yuan (approximately 21,650 USD). The vehicle’s design draws close parallels with the Galaxy E8 fastback, exuding a contemporary and stylish visual appeal. The vehicle’s sleek exterior design is highlighted by razor-sharp LED headlights and a sophisticated matrix-light closed grille on its entrance face, while its lateral profile features cleverly concealed door handles, creating a seamless and aerodynamic silhouette.
The rear boasts a striking visual appeal, featuring layered detailing that adds depth and dimensionality, while the through-type LED taillights create an eye-catching focal point. With the incorporation of cutting-edge CTB battery technology and the innovative Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent power management system, this trunk provides an abundance of storage capacity. Semi-closed aluminum alloy wheels elevate the overall aesthetic with an air of refined elegance. The doorways sealed shut with a satisfying thud, their precisely fitted panels and flawless coat of paint exuding an aura of dependability.
The interior design of the Galaxy E5 and E8 models features a sleek, modern aesthetic that exudes understated elegance. With its substantial floating display screen and sleek white interior, the design exudes a sophisticated elegance. The build quality stands out, boasting robust, tactilely precise buttons and controls.
The cabin boasts a sleek, floating LCD instrument panel, accompanied by a high-definition heads-up display and a flat-bottomed steering wheel that exudes sporty flair. Powered by China’s cutting-edge Dragon Eagle One 7nm CPU and running on Meizu’s highly customizable Flyme Auto OS, this device seamlessly blends advanced technology with a focus on the driver’s experience.
A notable difference between our check automotive and the pre-production model showcased at the Shenzhen Auto Show is the state-of-the-art 16-speaker Flyme audio system, boasting exceptional sound quality. The manufacturing mannequin’s audio system has been meticulously calibrated to simulate an immersive experience akin to Dolby Atmos, accurately replicating the spatiality and sonic nuances of a film or music track in real-time. The audio quality has undergone a significant enhancement. Consolation is prioritized. Equipped with advanced amenities, these front seats boast heated functions, precise airflow control, and soothing massage capabilities, while the adjustable backrests cater to individual preferences, ensuring unparalleled comfort and support.
The exact dimensions of the trunk have yet to be publicly revealed. The car by visual examination appears to have a substantial trunk compartment. For added convenience, the vehicle features two convenient storage compartments: one located beneath the rear air vents and another discreetly situated beneath the rear seats.
The Galaxy E5 aims to rival BYD’s Atto 3 in the market. Measuring 4,615mm in length, 1,901mm in width, and 1,670mm in height, the vehicle boasts a 2,750mm wheelbase and a curb weight of 1,615kg, only marginally larger and lighter than its Atto 3 counterpart. The BYD Tang offers a front-wheel drive configuration paired with a sole motor producing 160 kilowatts and 320 Newton meters of torque, outperforming its Atto 3 counterpart by 10 kilowatts and 10 Newton meters respectively. While the Galaxy E5’s aerodynamics are commendable, its 0.269 Cd still lags behind the Atto 3’s more impressive 0.29 Cd, highlighting the latter’s superior air resistance performance.
Prior to this, we assessed the Zeekr 007 and the Galaxy E8 – both vehicles built on Geely’s scalable modular architecture (SEA) platform. The Galaxy E5 is built upon a cutting-edge GEA architecture, evolved directly from the successful SEA design. During our test drive on familiar suburban routes in Zhuhai, the chassis exhibited impressive stability. Despite lacking a sport driving mode, the Galaxy E5 is designed to deliver a comfortable and refined ride.
The automotive’s suspension is expertly tuned to absorb the rigors of urban roadways, delivering a smooth and uninterrupted journey over even the most pronounced humps and bumps. The innovative CTB battery integration technology enables a 50:50 front-to-rear axle load ratio, thereby achieving a significant reduction in weight, lowering the centre of gravity, and enhancing overall vehicle rigidity. The E5 model demonstrates a satisfactory level of handling performance. Despite its notable physique, the vehicle exhibits a distinct propensity for rolling on curves, accompanied by a marked deficiency in traction during sharp turns.
On flat, straight stretches of road, it’s a completely different scenario. The single motor’s 160 kW output and 320 Nm of torque enable swift acceleration to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, guaranteeing a rapid response for quick getaways at intersections. The Galaxy E5 leverages Geely’s innovative Galaxy 11-in-1 clever drive system, condensing key components into a compact package that weighs just 79.8 kilograms and occupies only 72 litres of space.
The noise, vibration, and harshness package is an exceptionally good value for its price considering the overall quality of this vehicle. At low speeds, the cabin remains remarkably quiet. Since the dawn of automotive engineering, vehicles have consistently operated without producing unpleasant sounds up to speeds of approximately 62 miles per hour. The steering is subtle yet precise. Throughout the test drive, I thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious massage seats with adjustable airflow.
As we returned to the Galaxy dealership’s parking area, I quipped, “You shouldn’t put too much faith in auto parking when buying a car at this price point, should you?” The Galaxy representative countered with a straightforward response: “Actually, this top-of-the-line model does come equipped with auto parking.” At first, I was astonished that such features were available at this price point without precedent. I was once taught how to operate the automatic parking system. As the clock struck zero, the E5 smoothly glided into its designated parking space.
We’ve equipped our vehicle with a robust 60.22 kWh Aegis short-blade lithium-iron-phosphate battery, offering an impressive range of up to 530 kilometers on a single charge (CLTC).
The Geely Galaxy E5 features an array of advanced security systems, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. With its robust high-strength metal body and protective anti-collision cage shielding the battery, the overall structural integrity is significantly bolstered, thereby ensuring superior occupant safety. These options, coupled with the automobile’s robust design and cutting-edge expertise, ensure a safe and dependable driving experience.
While positioned as a rival to the BYD Atto 3, the Galaxy E5 aims to surpass its competitor in several key aspects. For the first time, our Sunday China Drive lineup showcases a luxurious 157,000 yuan (approximately 21,650 USD) vehicle boasting advanced wellness features, including therapeutic massage capabilities, and innovative auto-parking technology. Geely’s determination is evident in its bid to usurp BYD’s stronghold on China’s compact electric SUV market, fueled by the success of the ATTO 3 (Yuan Plus). The company has successfully met the rigorous standards of both European and Australian regulatory bodies, earning N-Cap certifications, and is now poised to launch its product internationally. Proton, backed by Geely, is poised to unveil an E5-based electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia by 2025, under its Proton eMas moniker.
Between January and June 2024, Geely Auto Group reported a remarkable surge in exports, with a staggering 197,428 units sold – a whopping 67% increase from the previous year, effectively more than doubling China’s overall automotive export growth rate. The recent surge in demand underscores Geely’s growing global competitiveness and the expanding international footprint of Chinese automakers. On August 3, Samsung is set to release the Galaxy E5, bringing premium features and enhancements to a wider audience.
