Overview
In the distant past, circa late 1980s, the moniker “NX” has consistently signified a transformative odyssey, colloquially referred to as New eX-crossing. Honda has revamped its popular adventure motorcycle for 2024 by renaming the CB500X to NX500, ushering in a new era of excitement on two wheels. However, the bike will undergo a transformation that goes beyond just an identity change. Weight has decreased by 7 kilograms, now standing at 432 kilograms, a notable reduction from its original 439 kilograms, with the introduction of the newly designed cast-aluminum wheels, which have shaved off an impressive 3.3 kilograms of unsprung weight in isolation? The updated Honda features enhanced performance through the incorporation of common mode torque management, refined acceleration courtesy of ECU updates, reconfigured suspension settings, a modern 5-inch high-resolution touchscreen display, and advanced LED headlights for improved visibility.
The heart of this motorbike beats with a liquid-cooled 471cc parallel-twin powerplant, precision-calibrated to deliver robust low-to-mid-range pulling power between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. The engine is fuelled by PGM-FI gas injection and now features as standard the innovative Honda Selectable Torque Management system, enhancing traction control.
The chassis is distinguished by its suspension system, which leverages a 41mm Showa Separate Function Fork-Large Piston (SFF-BP) fork featuring 5.2 inches of travel, as well as a preload-adjustable Showa shock delivering 5.3 inches of travel. The wheelbase measures a compact 56.8 inches, while the seat height remains conveniently low at just 32.8 inches. Braking on the vehicle is managed by a combination of Nissin’s two-piston calipers and 296mm discs on each rear wheel, as well as a single-piston caliper and 240mm disc for the front wheel; anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are also standard. The brand-new, lightweight cast-aluminum wheels feature distinctive Y-shaped spokes and come equipped with 110/80R-19 front and 160/60R-17 rear tires for optimal performance.
