NIU issues US recall of 2022 MQiGT EVO electric scooter, but fix is a software update
SHARE

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice for NIU’s MQiGT EVO, its latest flagship electric scooter model, affecting units sold in the United States. Through a seamless Tesla-esque upgrade, the fix isn’t inherently a hardware challenge but rather a straightforward software update.

The impacted vehicles are 2022 MQi GT EVO electric scooters, a newly introduced model in the US market that has only recently been launched.

Following a recall discovery, the EVO electric scooter is afflicted by a firmware issue that can cause the motor to experience sudden energy loss. As the issue originates from a faulty firmware rather than any defects in the motor, the company was able to resolve the problem through a straightforward software update for the scooter.

In Europe, the software update precluded the need for a product recall. Despite this, US regulatory requirements necessitate an official recall, even in cases where a software update offers a feasible solution. While software-based recalls affect numerous automakers, Tesla’s homeowners seem to have a more personal experience with these updates and patches.

As a professional editor, I improve the text in a different style and return:

A spokesperson for Northern Illinois University’s (NIU) esteemed organization.

Protecting the safety and well-being of our riders is our top priority. Following a thorough examination of potential issues with the MQiGT EVO, our dedicated team swiftly implemented targeted firmware updates to rectify and resolve any problems, ensuring maximum performance and reliability.

Following a thorough inquiry in Europe, it was determined that a product recall is not necessary, as issues were effectively addressed through targeted software updates for the vehicle’s onboard computer.

We’re collaborating closely with our US-based sellers to ensure compliance with US regulatory requirements by executing necessary product updates through a formal recall process whenever deemed necessary.

As we remain committed to realizing the vision of the EVO, we see it as a beacon of innovation for 125cc-equivalent scooters’ future direction.

The NIU MQiGT EVO made its debut less than a year ago at the EICMA 2021 Milan Motorcycle Show.

Having attended the event, I was fortunate enough to take a few exhilarating rides on the latest electric scooter model. Compared to my current NQiGT Pro Longed Vary electric scooter, which I’ve relied on for commuting purposes over the past two years, this new model exhibited significantly enhanced performance, boasting a noticeable surge in acceleration when leaving a standstill.

While space constraints limited its acceleration, the 100 km/h (62 mph) speed restriction makes the scooter more practical for urban and suburban commuters who need to navigate higher-speed roads.

The scooter features a robust 72-volt electrical system, which enables the powerful 5-kilowatt motor to harness maximum energy. Two 72V, 26Ah batteries combine to provide a total capacity of approximately 1.872 kWh. That’s sufficient for the entire 75km (47 miles) of varying terrain.

Check out the unveiling of the MQiGT EVO electric scooter at the Milan Motorbike Show by watching the video below. Will you have the opportunity to test ride NIU’s forthcoming RQi e-bike, poised to surpass the EVO as the company’s fastest electric vehicle yet, boasting unprecedented speeds.
