Gates Carbon Drive reveals new Moto X5 belts, making electric motorcycles even more silent
SHARE

Gates Carbon Drive is a global leader in belt drive technology, revolutionizing the industry by replacing traditional chain systems on two-wheeled vehicles such as bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles. The Gates Carbon Drive Moto X5 product line officially debuted today, further refining the already stealthy electric bicycles to achieve an unprecedented level of silence.

Gates Unveils Revolutionary Moto X5 Belt Drive Technology

The Gates belt drives boast a proprietary blend of high-stiffness, long-wearing synthetic compounds reinforced with carbon fibre cords, ensuring unparalleled performance and durability in the face of rigorous demands.

The innovative nylon tooth material significantly enhances the Moto X5 drivetrain’s durability, while its reverse-compatible design seamlessly integrates with the company’s Moto X9 sprockets.

Designed to last, Gates’ belts are built to withstand continuous use for tens of thousands of miles, depending on the vehicle and installation configuration. Compared to chain drives, these transmissions produce significantly fewer noises over longer distances.

According to impartial laboratory tests, the Gates Moto X5 belt drive system demonstrated a significant reduction in noise levels, achieving a notable 15-decibel advantage over chain drives across a range of operating speeds.

Noise reduction being just one of several benefits of belt-driven systems like this? Significant reductions in maintenance requirements and enhanced performance capabilities are also notable advantages.

Belt drives offer a significant advantage over chain systems, as they require virtually no maintenance beyond the occasional visual inspection.

Given the wear and tear of frequent use, the longevity of bike components means that lengthy maintenance intervals are crucial, allowing riders to minimize downtime and focus on actual riding rather than constant tinkering.

The Gates Corporation suggests that the Moto X5 boasts a performance advantage over traditional chain-driven systems.

As the corporate defined:

Throughout the lifespan of the vehicle, under normal operating conditions and routine maintenance scenarios, the Moto X5 boasts superior power efficiency compared to traditional chain drives, ultimately leading to enhanced vehicle range, a crucial consideration for electric vehicle applications.

While commonly touted as a greener alternative to belts, the environmental benefits of chains are actually limited to their initial production cycle; worn-out chains require frequent replacement, driving up waste and resource consumption. As a result of constant use, the chain’s effectiveness diminishes due to premature wear and tear. Belt transmissions consistently demonstrate optimal efficiency throughout their lifespan, rendering them more effective than chains over the entire useful lifetime of the drivetrain.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is focusing his efforts on the substantial market opportunities presented by sit-down electric scooters and commuter-oriented e-bikes. Electric scooters, a type of two-wheeled electric automobile, have experienced remarkable growth in usage across Asia, with their adoption pace slowing down slightly in Europe and North America as well.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global sales of electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles exceeded 10 million units in 2021, with the majority contributed by China, India, and Vietnam.

By the end of this decade, the International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipates that more than 80% of all new two and three-wheeler sales in China will comprise electric vehicles.

Tom Pitstick, Senior Vice Chairman of Strategic Planning and Chief Advertising Officer at Gates, further clarified.

As the shift from internal combustion engines to electric scooters gains momentum in key markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and China, we expect drivers to increasingly prioritize quieter, more efficient, and durable drivetrains. The Moto X5 is engineered to cater to demands for stealthy, enduring, and hassle-free performance. Congratulations to the efforts of our world R&D groups that made this breakthrough doable.

Desirous to experience the innovative Moto X5 up close, attendees of the China International Motorcycle Show from November 3-5 or the EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show from November 8-13 will have the opportunity to test ride this exciting new system.

Electrek’s Take

As an avid enthusiast of Bill Gates’ innovative ventures, I’ve consistently opted to ride electrical bicycles equipped with the reliable and efficient Gates carbon drive system.

Each time I ride a Zero bike or Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire, I appreciate the peaceful journey facilitated by the silent operation of Gates’ belt drives.

Rarely do I come across a brand-new chain-drive electrical scooter or bike being launched on the market anymore.

My personal favourites among electric two-wheelers are the Sur Ron Light Bee and the Gogoro S2 ABS Efficiency. It’s astonishing that every vehicle is so incredibly loud, don’t you think? When riding electric vehicles, the primary sound you’re met with is a continuous chain hum, exacerbated by the absence of exhaust noise that typically buffers it, much like an internal combustion engine (ICE)–powered scooter or motorcycle. Regularly testing the chain tension is crucial for maintaining optimal performance in an electric bicycle, aside from routine brake pad replacements and tire rotations – essentially, this is the primary maintenance task required for these vehicles. Here are the two-wheel and four-wheeled electric scooters offered by Sur Ron and Gogoro, respectively, which come with Gate’s belt drive options – my goal is to learn more about each of these rapidly.

Indeed, it seems likely that the Moto X5 will capitalize on the current trend of electric scooters and bikes, riding the wave of growing popularity. While the absence of maintenance costs is certainly an attractive feature, the primary advantage lies in the prolonged lifespan itself, which offers long-term value to the owner.
