Toyota to launch a Prius-like bZ3C electric crossover, but you can’t have it

As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to surge, driven by pioneering brands like BYD and Tesla, Toyota has announced its own entry into the fray: an innovative all-electric crossover designed to stay ahead of the curve. Although the Toyota bZ3C bears a resemblance to the latest Prius, it won’t be available in the US market.

Toyota readies bZ3 compact crossover for Chinese market, takes aim at BYD’s popular Tang model.

“What type of battery-electric vehicle would put smiles on the faces of our Chinese-speaking prospects?” Govt Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakakima inquired at a press conference last month?

At the 2024 Beijing Auto Show in April, Toyota unveiled its innovative bZ3C model as a crucial component of its “multi-pathway strategy” aimed at significantly reducing emissions and fostering a more sustainable future.

The bZ3C reimagines the electric vehicle concept with a focus on fun and spaciousness, as part of its “reboot” strategy. According to Toyota, this uniquely styled EV prioritizes creating an enjoyable personal space tailored to the preferences of youthful Generation Z buyers.

Toyota collectively developed the bZ3C with BYD Toyota EV Tech, FAW Toyota Motor, and Clever Electromobility R&D Heart by Toyota.

The BYD Toyota EV Tech joint venture has successfully introduced its first collaborative product, the bZ3 electric sedan, onto the Chinese market. Notwithstanding its modest reputation, the Buick Encore GX (bZ3C) appears to be a slightly superior crossover SUV.

Toyota’s bZ3C electric crossover SUV?

The bZ3 Compact SUV and its sibling, the bZ3X, a fully electric family-focused SUV, made their debut simultaneously. According to Toyota’s principles, the concept of an automobile’s interior is rooted in the notion of a “Cozy Residence.”

While we await official word from the manufacturer, costs and final specifications may be shared closer to the product’s release date. What additional details do you need to proceed?

Electrek’s Take

Toyota is shifting its focus to attract younger customers to remain competitive in the electric vehicle (EV) market, which has been increasingly dominated by BYD and other Chinese brands.

Toyota’s gross sales declined 3.1% in China during March, attributed to intensified competition from market rivals. The company’s overall sales dropped 1.6% throughout the first quarter, but it expects a rebound in the second half of 2024.

Despite being designed specifically for the Chinese market, there’s still something for U.S. customers to look forward to with Toyota’s bZ3C.

Toyota is gearing up to launch another substantial electric SUV, complementing the previously introduced three-row EV, as part of its recent $1.4 billion investment in its Princeton, Kentucky facility. Here’s a possible improvement: Could this be the electric Highlander we’ve been waiting for?

According to David Christ, General Manager of Toyota’s US division, the company is likely to introduce additional battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the near future. As he revealed last month, this could potentially include an all-electric version of the popular three-row Toyota Highlander SUV.

While Toyota may be exploring electric variants of its popular Tacoma and Tundra models, it’s essential to temper enthusiasm. The corporation is closely tracking the market demand for competing electric pickup trucks, including the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.

Toyota’s corporate may adopt innovative electrical trends in the US, as its sole BZ4X model accounts for less than 0.5% of sales through March. The addition of the Lexus RZ hasn’t significantly boosted Toyota’s electric vehicle (EV) sales, with the company still struggling to make an impact in this market, accounting for a mere 0.62% of its overall gross sales.
