As a vital solution, commuter electrical bikes play a crucial role in reducing America’s reliance on vehicles for urban navigation. The Propella 9S Professional V2 is engineered to help individuals travel freely, whether commuting to work, college, or the local coffee shop, while also facilitating independent urban navigation. While many electrical commuter bikes on the market may offer varying levels of quality and features, Propella stands out for its exceptional value and several unique offerings that are uncommon at this price point.

What you see isn’t everything there is to get.

Many e-bikes clearly outline their features and specifications from the start. While most people may not notice one crucial feature, modern e-bikes often come equipped with torque sensors.

The Propella 9S Professional V2 boasts a cutting-edge torque sensor, a notable upgrade from the common cadence sensors found in most entry-level e-bikes, enabling more precise pedal assistance activation.

Here’s an improved version: The key point we’ve discussed previously is that torque sensors primarily enhance a bike’s fit and responsiveness by mimicking real-world pedaling patterns more accurately, making it feel even more natural to ride. When riding an e-bike equipped with a cadence sensor, the experience is often marred by a laggy feel, followed by sudden surges forward – a common issue plaguing many such systems. In contrast, electric bicycles featuring torque sensors typically provide a much more intuitive and responsive ride, allowing pedalers to effortlessly tap into motorized assistance as needed.

While the Propella 9S Professional’s torque sensor is indeed impressive, it’s just one factor contributing to its excellence – and an exceptional value-add considering the price point.

What sets this e-bike apart are its standout features: a vibrant colour LCD display, ergonomic adjustable handlebars, reliable hydraulic disc brakes, a seamless 9-speed transmission, an integrated LED headlight, and a comprehensive fender set included in the package.

Upon closer examination of that transmission, an interesting phenomenon emerged – despite having multiple gear options, I found myself consistently settling for the highest gear in daily driving. I reside in a dense urban environment, which means that the advantages of perpetually escalating leverage become more relevant. In cities with hilly terrain, having the right gear options is invaluable, making single-speed cycling a less-than-ideal choice – as I learned firsthand when I tried to navigate the ups and downs without the aid of gears.

While some may lament the scarcity of suspension, I understand their perspective. Many individuals genuinely crave suspension systems as a means of added reassurance. By designing a frame that disperses stress evenly across multiple points, you’ll end up with a sturdier and more durable bike, boasting fewer vulnerabilities to potential failures. The unique design features two tires that provide additional cushioning, setting it apart from many metropolitan bikes. The fork utilizes a robust 12mm thru-axle, ensuring a secure and reliable connection – a notable improvement over the quick-release skewers often found on budget-friendly city e-bikes.

One drawback of the bike is that its 36V battery is relatively small, boasting a capacity of just 350 watt-hours. Despite the absence of a throttle, this bike is designed to be highly efficient thanks to its pedal assist technology, which allows riders to achieve remarkable ranges – up to 50 miles or 80 km on a single charge. Despite its compact size, the removable battery is easily detached using the provided key, allowing you to take it off your bike whenever convenient. The phone also includes a swift charger that efficiently replenishes its battery to full capacity within a mere three hours. Typically, the cost savings will be more pronounced since you’ll rarely ride the bike completely out of fuel. That battery and bike combination has earned additional certification from the Safety Certification Group (SGS) to meet UL 2271 and UL 2849 standards, a distinction that is becoming increasingly important amid growing concerns about battery safety.

What’s the takeaway?

While its 500W peak-rated motor enables it to reach 20 mph, this Class 1 urban e-bike’s true value lies in its ability to efficiently navigate city streets as a reliable commuter vehicle. At just 43.5 pounds (19.7 kilograms), this e-bike is surprisingly lightweight, even among its peers in the industry.

With each iteration, the corporation has expanded its bike’s feature set, culminating in the 9S Professional V2, which now offers an impressive array of components catering to most commuters’ needs, excluding only the throttle option. While some may be obsessed with the idea of having a throttle, Propella has wisely addressed this concern by introducing another model that satisfies their throttle cravings.

At an unbeatable price of US$1,299, the Propella 9S Professional represents a remarkable value proposition. To ensure you’re buying a high-quality e-bike with numerous valuable components, you can’t afford to make a mistake here. Can’t you crave more than just blue-on-black?
