Volkswagen plans to introduce its entry-level electric vehicles by 2027. The all-new affordable Volkswagen EVs are expected to debut at a competitive price point of around $21,800 (approximately €20,000).

Volkswagen aims to launch affordable electric vehicles by 2027.

After abandoning plans to collaborate with Renault on a budget-friendly electric vehicle priced at €20,000, Volkswagen has decided to proceed without a partner.

Volkswagen has recently announced its final decision on affordable electric vehicle options. Despite failing to reach a settlement with VW, Renault is still planning to introduce a low-cost Twingo e-Tech successor, with a similar price tag.

In response to a recent announcement, Volkswagen intends to publicly debut its lineup of affordably priced electric vehicles in 2027. Volkswagen aims to price its product around $21,800 (or approximately 20,000 euros).

In March, the German automaker unveiled its ID 2all concept, offering a first glimpse at the affordable electric vehicle’s sleek design.

Volkswagen’s ID.2all electric vehicle promises to deliver the spaciousness of a Golf while being priced affordably, like its popular Polo model, according to the company. Volkswagen anticipates its entry-level electric vehicle will debut below $27,000 (approximately €25,000), with the company aiming to introduce an even more affordable model, potentially dubbed the ID 1.

Based primarily on a modified MEB platform, the ID 2all electric vehicle is expected to achieve an estimated range of up to 279 miles (450 kilometers). The ID 1 is likely to draw components from its larger sibling, ID 2, utilizing smaller battery options such as 38 or 58 kilowatt-hours.

Volkswagen has further teased its upcoming ID.2 Allroads SUV, as depicted above. The company plans to launch its first-ever electric sport utility vehicle, an entry-level model, by 2026.

Electrek’s Take

Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce affordable electric vehicles by 2026 or 2027, but several budget-friendly options are already available on the market.

Volvo has introduced the EX30, priced from approximately €36,000 ($39,150) in European markets. Volvo’s most affordable electric vehicle starts at $35,000 in the United States, with initial deliveries expected to commence this summer.

Formally launched in China last week. The Volvo EX30 is set to debut at a competitive price point of $27,800, or approximately 200,800 yuan, directly challenging BYD’s affordable electric vehicle offerings, such as the Atto 3 and Dolphin.

The all-new Chevrolet Equinox Electric Vehicle (EV) has started its delivery journey across the United States, reaching customers with eco-friendly driving experiences. Although the most budget-friendly option currently starts at $43,295, General Motors has announced that the entry-level Equinox 1LT FWD model will become available for around $35,000 later this year.

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro’s base price with a tax credit score is $35,795 for the LT trim level. Once the entry-level model is launched, prices are expected to start at a minimum of $27,495, factoring in the electric vehicle tax incentive.

Several major automakers, including Kia, have unveiled affordable electric vehicle options. In a major announcement last week, Kia revealed its latest electric vehicle, the EV3, boasting an impressive range of up to 600 kilometers (372 miles) under WLTP testing conditions. The launch will trigger a chain reaction of affordable electric vehicles (EVs), starting with the EV2, followed by the EV3, then the EV4, and ultimately culminating in the release of the EV5. Kia’s upcoming electric vehicles are expected to retail between $30,000 and $50,000.

The Kia EV6 is set to debut in Korea in July 2024, with a subsequent European launch scheduled for the latter half of the year. Kia has unveiled plans to expand its electric vehicle (EV) sales globally, with no specific mention of the US market.

In the next 12 months, Kia is expected to introduce the EV6, a budget-friendly electric sedan that will debut with a starting price of around $35,000.

The South Korean automaker has already introduced the EV5 in China, with a starting price of around $20,000, equivalent to 149,800 yuan. In Australia, however, it is expected to retail for approximately $40,000 AUD, which is equivalent to around 70,000.

Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia have successfully established themselves as leaders in the US electric vehicle (EV) market with a range of affordable options. The starting MSRP for the IONIQ 6 in the US market during the first quarter of 2024 was approximately $36,506. The Hyundai Kona Electric’s starting price is $32,675, while the IONIQ 5 kicks off at $41,800.

By 2027, a reasonably-priced Volkswagen electric vehicle (EV) may no longer seem extraordinary, as many are already starting to hit the market.

As demand for affordable electric vehicles continues to surge steadily. Can VW meet the demand? Will innovative startups rise to the top, or will they get lost in a vast ocean of competition? The suggestions I have are unclear, please clarify?
