Texas-based MOD Bikes launches 28 MPH full suspension adventure e-bike

Mod Bikes, an innovative e-bike manufacturer based in Austin, Texas, has unveiled its latest electrifying addition to the Mod Bikes family.

The latest addition to our family of e-bikes, the Mod Black, is a cutting-edge full-suspension electric bicycle engineered for thrilling adventures.

During my visit to Austin for the SXSW Conference, I had the unique opportunity to get an exclusive first glimpse at the latest model’s journey. There, MOD Bikes unveiled its entire 2024 lineup, boasting a plethora of innovative components across the range.

The introduction of new color options and integrated torque sensors was also a feature of the newly launched MOD Black e-bike, unveiled today.

The brand-new e-bike features MOD’s innovative electrical system, paired with a powerful 750W rear hub motor capable of reaching a peak speed of 28 mph (45 km/h); however, the bike can be electronically limited to slower velocities if preferred by the rider.

For enthusiasts of throttled bicycles, this model’s inclusion of a throttle is undoubtedly a highlight. However, it’s the harmonious integration of a torque sensor and four precise PAS modes – designed for effortless cruising in Eco, efficient hauling with Cargo, spirited acceleration with Sport, and explosive power with Turbo – that truly elevates the riding experience to new heights. With its full-suspension design resembling a high-performance mountain bike, pedal power plays a huge role in amplifying the sense of adventure. Several initial concerns arise when examining the solo journey of a bicycle.

Pedaling in tandem with the throttle enables the 48V 15Ah UL-certified battery to extend its maximum range by up to 50 miles (80 km), as solo throttle use can significantly shorten this distance. For riders seeking greater versatility, an optional factory-installed secondary battery is available, effectively doubling the maximum range to 100 miles or 160 kilometers.

The MOD Black seamlessly integrates with MOD’s proprietary Snap-On rack equipment on its rear rack, enabling riders to effortlessly attach various gear without the need for a multi-tool or excessive assembly time.

The Black e-bike leverages MOD’s innovative Join system, seamlessly integrating various wireless-connected accessories to create a cohesive riding experience.

One of the initial strategic partnerships MOD highlighted was with Lumos, a pioneering developer of intelligent bicycle helmets featuring seamless wireless connectivity to the bike’s flip signal controls. When the rider activates the flip signs, the helmet lights up simultaneously on both sides? When you pull the brake lever, the helmet’s brake lights are simultaneously activated, complemented by the bike’s standard brake lights.

The bike boasts an array of appealing features, including punchy hydraulic disc brakes, 3-inch tyres that skillfully bridge the gap between supple fat tyres and agile mountain bike tyres, as well as a bright 300-lumen headlight.

Indeed, the full-suspension configuration provides riders with an unparalleled level of comfort and control across a wide range of terrains. Ultimately, the manufacturer pitches this motorcycle as a rugged, off-road-capable vehicle, encouraging riders to fully exploit its capabilities on challenging trails. While it may share some characteristics with an e-bike, its integrated rack and WiFi-enabled turn signal technology also suggest it could excel as a high-quality full-suspension commuter.

The highly anticipated MOD Black is now available for pre-order, with shipments set to begin in mid-June. Priced at $2,999, the offering is premium-priced compared to most direct-to-consumer electric mountain bikes, yet MOD may be relying on its cutting-edge technology and reputation as a trusted, locally-inspired national e-bike brand to justify the higher cost. This product offers a comprehensive 5-year limited warranty and hassle-free returns at no additional cost.

After another 60 minutes on my bike in March, I’m now well-positioned to deliver a comprehensive assessment.

While the Black may offer a smoother ride compared to typical direct-to-consumer e-mountain bikes, it’s essential to consider its overall performance and value proposition. With its refined design, the ride is noticeably smoother, presenting a more streamlined appearance and featuring enhanced suspension that instills a sense of confidence on the road, eliminating any concern about navigating rough terrain without compromising comfort.

Although the 750W motor may be more powerful than I initially desired, I’m pleased with its inclusion. While I relish the convenience of having a throttle, I often find myself pedaling more frequently since the torque sensor creates an incredibly responsive ride, giving me a deep sense of engagement with the journey itself, rather than merely passively riding as the motor takes over. As the miles tick by, I’m convinced the engine is putting in more effort than I am; yet, I take solace in feeling like I’m making a difference, and flipping it into Eco mode gets my pulse racing once again.

While it’s true that this item has had a smoother journey than some more affordable alternatives, I need to consider the additional value brought by its expertise before making a final assessment.

Here are some photos from the onset of my research expedition. While this mannequin features a suspension seat system, it’s unlikely that this would be included in the standard production model, as the added complexity and cost may not justify its inclusion.
