Detractors dismissed the K1 as a pricey and cumbersome entity, while its propensity to retain heat did little to alleviate concerns. While the K1’s ardent enthusiasts celebrated its exceptional performance and cutting-edge aerodynamics, criticism from detractors ultimately led to its premature discontinuation after a mere five-year production run.

Now, nearly four decades later, the K1 is widely regarded as a foundational model that sets the stage for serious collectors. While the idea of customization may seem illogical at first, it held a special significance for K1’s owner and the team at ItRocks!, a Portuguese workshop. Bikes.

“A keen enthusiast of the iconic BMW K1, our client dared us to reimagine the motorcycle’s design, infusing it with modern flair.” Bikes Osvaldo Coutinho. “Our objective was to develop a revolutionary bike that would redefine the industry standard, harnessing cutting-edge technology and premium materials while maintaining exceptional safety and compliance.”

The ItRocks! With Osvaldo Coutinho, Ana Pina, and Luís Teixeira at the helm, workforce embarked on its mission with unwavering dedication and passion. The primary objective was to meticulously strip the bike of its extensive plastic bodywork, remove the fuel tank, and dismount the seat. The team embarked on a comprehensive redesign of the K1’s search functionality.

Monocoque bodywork is a truly impressive innovation. Unique in its specialty, this bike stood out as a distinct departure from others. The newly fabricated tank and tail unit has been constructed as a single entity through the meticulous process of shaping sheet steel by hand. The motorcycle sits atop a bespoke subframe, featuring a luxurious combination of leather-based and suede in its custom-designed solo saddle, catering to the privileged rider’s comfort. The newly redesigned entrance fairing and aspect panels seamlessly integrate into a single unit that wraps around the rear wheel, forming a sleek profile that blends harmoniously with the tank and tail.

The brand-new, exceptionally stylish makeover of this K1’s bodywork marks a significant departure from its original, one-of-a-kind design. Nevertheless, the ItRocks! The workforce has been cautious in its approach to honoring tradition, opting to carry forward a few select design elements that are particularly meaningful. “We meticulously documented key attributes of the K1, including its square shape.” According to Osvaldo, regardless of our choice, we decided on the size limits for headlights. By drawing parallels, the design subtly nods to similarities between the deep knee indents of the gas tank and the angular vents on the side panels. The sleek finish of this brand-new design culminates in a classic silver paint job, complete with a subtle brushed metal sheen and an impressive livery inspired by the iconic BMW M specification.

Togetherness with an aesthetic overhaul, ItRocks! The workforce has successfully updated the K1’s outdated components to ensure its functionality remains relevant in today’s fast-paced market. Starting from the suspension’s current state, this bike now rests on an Öhlins FGRT 216 fork finished in an entrance-grade quality, while the rear suspension employs a Wimoto package paired with a high-performance YSS shock absorber. The brakes utilize Brembo calipers, strategically mounted to a pair of 320mm discs at the front. The workforce opted for a distinct approach in selecting custom-made strong disc wheels from Jonich Wheels, taking a novel route with their choice. With the enhanced efficiency protocol in place, the bike glides effortlessly on the rugged yet reliable Pirelli Angel GT sport touring tyres.

The addition of select Motogadget components enhances the modernization checklist. Savoring the thrill of being at the helm is enhanced by the sleek and modern design of the Motogadget Chronoclassic speedometer, perfectly integrated into the cockpit. With advanced technology comes innovative features: the bike’s bar-end flip indicators utilize M-Blaze discs, while the ergonomic hand controls maximize the functionality of Mo.change’s mini change blocks, all wrapped up with a secure mo.lock ignition system for seamless, keyless start-ups. The M.unit Blue electronics controller seamlessly integrates various components, combining Bluetooth connectivity with sleek Motogadget grips and modern glassless bar finish mirrors.

The Kawasaki K1 has been upgraded with high-end aftermarket components, including clip-on handlebars and a steering stabilizer from LSL, as well as rear components from BSK SpeedWorks, effectively elevating the bike to the next level. The Ohlins forks rest on TGP Racing’s triple clamps, while the hand controls comprise a blend of Domino and customized components from Tech. Perched atop the gasoline tank proudly displays the bold logo, “ItRocks!”. The workforce chose to implement a straightforward Monza-inspired filler design and discreetly integrated a compact yet potent LED brake light module within the rear assembly, yielding a subtle yet effective visual notification.

To ensure this K1 operates sturdily for many years to come, It truly does rock! The new engine has been completely overhauled to include a 987cc liquid-cooled longitudinal four-cylinder design. Renovated with modern flair, this piece now features updated hoses, wiring, and hardware. The proprietor considered the 100hp manufacturing unit performance satisfactory, and it exceeded their expectations. Installed a sleeker SC-Mission exhaust to give my ride a fresh new appearance and a more aggressive growl.

The 1980s was a time of unapologetic fashion statements, and BMW seized the opportunity to create the iconic K1 motorcycle. While this K1 cafe racer boasts a distinctively refined and modernized aesthetic, its unconventional design may not resonate with every individual’s taste; however, for those who appreciate its boldness, there’s always room for seconds.
