By the end of May, BYD’s popular car model, Seagull, had reached a remarkable milestone: 1 million cumulative sales since its inception, as verified through insurance registration data tracked by China EV DataTracker for the first week of June. Domestic and international gross revenues are combined in this total.
The all-electric hatchback debuted in April 2023 and started delivering vehicles in May of that year, achieving its one-millionth sale just 25 months later. According to China EV DataTracker, the Seagull brand accounts for approximately 13% of BYD’s model sales in China.

Last month, BYD acquired 60,131 units of Seagull, thereby elevating its total sales to 992,637, consistent with data disclosed by BYD to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. According to data from China EV DataTracker, Seagull’s weekly insurance coverage registrations revealed that it achieved over 1 million item sales in the first week of June.
Following the launch of BYD’s Seal 06 EV model on June 6 in Chengdu, the company officially announced that Seagull sales have reached one million units, specifically referencing cumulative sales up to the end of May.

Launched in 2023, the Seagull initially debuted at a price point of 73,800 yuan, equivalent to approximately 10,270 USD. In China, the price of an electric vehicle (EV) takes a drastic turn, with its starting cost reaching 63,800 yuan ($8,880) at the entry-level tier, exemplifying the country’s intense EV market dynamics.
Under CLTC conditions, the BYD Seagull boasts an impressive range of up to 405 kilometres, thanks to its 38.9 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) blade battery and 55 kW motor. With the integration of a single Nvidia Drive Orin N chip and primary advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), BYD aims to democratize assisted driving and make it accessible to a broader market.
In May, BYD Seagull successfully entered the European market under its rebranded title, Dolphin Surf. The base price starts at €19,990 (approximately $23,000 USD). This premium electric vehicle features an extended range battery pack, a more powerful motor, and a lengthened design of 210mm compared to its Chinese counterpart, the Seagull.
In 2025’s first five months, BYD Seagull recorded a significant surge in sales within mainland China, with a staggering 144,204 items sold, representing an impressive 8.7% year-on-year increase during the same period.
