The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market experienced a significant surge in demand during the first full week of May, with some notable deviations. Chinese electric vehicle stocks Nio, Xpeng, and BYD surged 13%, 24%, and 15% respectively, a stark departure from the previous week’s trends. The NIO Inc. automotive group recorded a notable surge in sales, with a total of 6,060 vehicles registered, representing an impressive 18.2% increase from the previous week?

Li Auto’s weekly gross sales are now publicly disclosed. Despite ceasing publication in March 2025, Li Auto complied with the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers’ recommendation to discontinue the reports, along with other stakeholders. CAAM reportedly argues that publicly disclosed weekly sales data “threatens to undermine the trade order” and “fuels vicious competition.” Following this, Li Auto decided to publish only its own weekly electric vehicle (EV) registration figures.

The weekly data are leveraged by consultants, analysts, and buyers to track monthly sales growth and accurately forecast delivery schedules. Automobile manufacturers publicly release monthly sales figures that encompass vehicles intended for showroom displays, test drives, and other purposes, whereas street traffic registration data only accounts for actual vehicle ownership.

China’s major media outlets have largely heeded CAAM’s counsel, opting to discontinue the dissemination of weekly ratings data. CarNewsChina persists in publishing regular updates on China’s insurance coverage registrations for electric vehicles, leveraging data from the reliable China EV DataTracker.

Chinese electric vehicle market: New energy power car (NEV) gross sales figures for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) are rounded and up-to-date. While ostensibly precise, the scenario also encompasses hydrogen-powered vehicles (FCEVs); nonetheless, their Chinese market performance is virtually nonexistent.

BYD reported a significant surge in automobile sales, with 67,980 vehicles registered, representing a notable 14.6% increase over the previous week’s total of 59,310 units. The week has been a landmark one for the Shenzhen-based automaker thus far in 2025.

BYD’s premium model, Denza, logged a significant 3.8% increase in sales, with 2,990 vehicles sold, compared to 2,880 units registered the previous week.

BYD’s off-road model Fang Cheng Bao saw a significant surge in demand, with registrations reaching 2,660 units, a 17.7% increase over the previous week’s total of 2,260 vehicles.

In April, BYD delivered 372,615 passenger vehicles, a figure virtually unchanged from March but representing a substantial 19.4% increase year-over-year? In January 2025, BYD achieved a remarkable milestone, shattering its previous records with an unprecedented performance.

BYD is expected to manufacture and sell approximately 5.5 million vehicles in 2025. Since the corporation exclusively offers electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, this is due to having discontinued internal combustion engine-only vehicle production as of April 2022.

Li Auto recorded a decline of 28.4% in automotive sales, with 8,160 units sold compared to 11,400 in the preceding week.

Li Auto delivered 33,939 vehicles in April, a 7.5% decrease from the previous month but a notable 31.6% increase from the same period last year.

Li Auto primarily specializes in manufacturing electric range-extended vehicles (EREVs), focusing on sport utility vehicles (SUVs). In its final year of operation, the company marked a significant milestone by introducing its inaugural all-electric vehicle, the Li Mega. Despite dismal sales, the struggling automaker’s coffeelike vehicle has been a major letdown. Chinese automaker Li Auto has pushed back the debut of its new all-electric SUV, the Li Auto i8, to Q2 2025.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Li Auto aims to sell over 700,000 vehicles by the end of 2025. In 2024, the corporation offered a total of 500,508 automobiles for sale.

Leapmotor, backed by Stellantis, saw a significant surge in sales, registering 7,800 vehicles, a notable 25.8% increase from the previous week’s 6,200 units.

Aito registered 7,540 vehicles, a 12.5% increase from the 6,700 recorded the previous week.

Xpeng, backed by Volkswagen, saw a notable surge in its sales, with 6,870 vehicles registered, representing a 23.8% increase from the prior week’s tally of 5,550 units.

XPeng delivered 35,045 vehicles worldwide in April, a 5.5% increase from the previous month and a staggering 273% surge compared to the same period last year.

For the sixth straight month, Xpeng’s monthly shipment volume has surpassed 30,000 units, with the popular Mona M03 entry-level sedan driving sales momentum. Despite the trend, Xpeng failed to reveal its Mona unit sales figures for April, leaving investors in the dark about the electric vehicle’s performance.

Xiaomi registered 5,180 vehicles, a 9.1% decline from the previous week’s total of 5,700 units.

Xiaomi markets one car model: the Xiaomi SU7 sedan. The three primary trims are accompanied by the SU7 Extremely, boasting an impressive 1,500 horsepower for exceptional performance capabilities. The company’s second automobile, the YU7 SUV, is scheduled to debut around mid-July. A leading Beijing-based smartphone manufacturer increased its 2025 production target by 50,000 units to 350,000 vehicles in March. Xiaomi surpassed expectations by delivering more than 135,000 vehicles globally in 2024, marking a significant milestone in the company’s foray into the automotive industry.

Deepal registered 4,700 vehicles, representing a 9.3% increase from the previous week’s total of 4,300.

Zeekr recorded a significant surge in sales, registering 4,310 vehicles, a remarkable 39.0% increase from the previous week’s total of 3,100 units?

NIO registered a significant increase in sales, with 3,930 vehicles sold, representing a substantial 13.3% rise from the previous week’s total of 3,470 units?

Onovo registered a significant increase in automobiles, with 1,660 vehicles recorded, representing a substantial 29.7% surge from the prior week’s total of 1,280. What an incredible achievement in the last quarter of the year?

Firefly registered 470 vehicles, a significant increase of 34.3% from the previous week’s total of 350. As delivery commences, it’s now the second week of continuous registration for Firefly.

NIO Inc. recorded a significant surge in vehicle registrations in China, with 6,060 units sold, representing an impressive 18.2% increase over the preceding week’s tally of 5,100 vehicles?

Nio delivered 23,900 vehicles worldwide in April, a remarkable 58.9% increase compared to the previous month, and an impressive 53% growth over the same period last year. A total of 4,400 vehicles were provided by Onvo, alongside an additional 231 offerings from Frefly. In April, Onvo recorded a 9% decline compared to March.

NIO Group aims to achieve a gross sales target of approximately 440,000 vehicles by 2025, with Onvo expected to account for roughly half of this total. In the past year, the company successfully produced and delivered a total of 220,000 vehicles.

NIO launched its third model, the electric vehicle (EV) called Firefly, on April 19. The model’s title is Firefly, and accordingly, the electric vehicle (EV) is also titled Firefly, leveraging a consistent brand identity. The compact electric hatchback starts at 125,800 yuan ($16,770), inclusive of the battery.

Firefly helps battery swap. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to swap batteries at present, since there aren’t any suitable exchange points available. As a result of the discontinuation of the Firefly-focused swap stations, the next step is the introduction of the fifth-generation facility, expected to benefit the Nio, Onvo, and Firefly models, with limited availability scheduled for the following year.

The highly anticipated Firefly spacecraft is set to lift off in a window spanning June to August, with the exact date yet to be confirmed for European observers.

Tesla registered a significant decline in automobile sales, with just 3,070 units sold, representing a staggering 57.9% drop from the previous week’s total of 7,290 vehicles.

Tesla’s gross sales in China plummeted 9% to 28,731 units in April, while the overall battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market surged 38%.

Avatar registered 2,630 vehicles, a significant 25.2% increase from the 2,100 units recorded the previous week.
