Despite appearing minor, uneven road surfaces can prove frustrating, with the potential to cause significant damage or even injury if not anticipated in time. What if your electric vehicle could seamlessly capture kinetic energy generated by driving over bumps, effectively converting the motion into supplementary power for its battery? BMW is developing a cutting-edge suspension system engineered to seamlessly adapt to varying road conditions.

BMW obtains patent for innovative suspension tech that charges electric vehicle batteries

BMW has submitted a novel patent to the German patent office, detailing the design of a revolutionary suspension system capable of harnessing energy from the wheel motion of an electric vehicle as it absorbs shock from bumps.

As the automotive industry accelerates its transition to fully electric vehicles, manufacturers are rushing to devise strategies to boost EV range. As battery technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly capable of matching the performance and range of their gasoline-powered counterparts. Regardless, BMW intends to take it to the next level.

BMW is overhauling its suspension design, which traditionally dissipates energy by assisting wheel motion to produce usable power?

The submitted exhibit showcases a pioneering design that harnesses kinetic energy as the wheel interacts with road irregularities when driven over a bump. When the pent-up kinetic energy is harnessed, it is transmitted to a generator unit that efficiently converts it into usable electricity, which in turn charges the electric vehicle’s battery.

Car manufacturers have introduced innovative solutions aimed at boosting the range of electric vehicles (EVs), while others are developing techniques to optimize energy harvesting during travel. Capturing kinetic energy generated by pedestrian traffic on urban streets to replenish power reserves is an innovative approach.

Electrek’s Take

Sensible transfer, BMW. If the German automaker can successfully convey its technological expertise to the market, it may well prove to be a game-changer. Despite potential concerns, a premium offering could be made available for those willing to pay a fee.

Mercedes-Benz has rolled out an over-the-air update offering an “Acceleration Enhancement” for its electric vehicles, but users will need to pay a premium of $1,200 annually to unlock the feature. Tesla offers a performance-enhancing upgrade called the “Acceleration Boost Package” for an extra $2,000.

While BMW’s innovative suspension system may not significantly boost acceleration, it will likely be regarded as a luxurious feature to be scrutinized.

If and when BMW’s energy-capturing suspension technology reaches the market, it is likely to come with a hefty price tag. Considering the constant wear and tear of driving over rough roads, a suspension upgrade could be an excellent addition to enhance the ride quality and overall driving experience. I’m excited to incorporate this item into various areas around my house for its utility and functionality.
