The BYD Dolphin has been recognized as the safest vehicle in Latin America, achieving a perfect 5-star rating in the Latin NCAP’s crash and safety assessment program. It’s also the primary battery electric vehicle to have earned a perfect 5-star rating in Latin NCAP’s testing history.

The BYD Dolphin is a compact electric hatchback model that made its market debut in China in 2021. By 2023, it had conquered Latin America, becoming a top-selling phenomenon in Brazil. Prior to its introduction, the BYD Dolphin, specifically tailored for European markets, had secured 5-star ratings from both Euro NCAP and Australian NCAP’s rigorous crash tests. In December 2022, a Chinese-language variant of this compact hatchback emerged as the safest Chinese-language vehicle to date, as certified by Latin NCAP.

The BYD Dolphin has secured a perfect five-star rating from Latin NCAP, a rigorous testing program designed to assess the safety performance of vehicles sold in Latin America.

The BYD Dolphin, assessed by Latin NCAP, features a standard complement of seven airbags and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package, offering enhanced safety capabilities for occupants. The vehicle’s body is composed primarily of high-strength steel, accounting for 78.2% of its construction. Given its exceptional performance in the New Car Assessment Program, it’s hardly surprising that the automotive achieved such a high score.

The BYD Dolphin achieved the top score in the Infant Occupant safety category with a remarkable 93.17% rating. The Grown-up Security Class purchased approximately 92.6% of its target goal. The outcomes of pedestrian safety and susceptible highway customers’ security have achieved remarkable results, boasting figures of 77.03% and 85.17%, respectively.

Representatives from Latin NCAP revealed that a comprehensive assessment was conducted on the ADAS bundle in this compact five-door hatchback, evaluating its performance in frontal crashes, side impacts, whiplash scenarios, pedestrian safety, electronic stability control, and various advanced driver-assistance systems – including autonomous emergency braking for vulnerable road users, city streets, interurban roads, lane-keeping assist, speed-limit notification, and blind-spot monitoring. The vehicle earned a perfect 5-star rating in this rigorous evaluation.

BYD’s Dolphin has become China’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer and the first EV to achieve a 5-star rating from Latin NCAP. Since then, it has officially become the safest Chinese automaker in Latin America. This assessment is valid in Brazil.

Extra about BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin, designed specifically for the Brazilian market, measures 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Specifically, the latter measures 185 mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 20 mm greater in height than its counterpart. The electric motor generates 95 horsepower and 180 Newton-meters of torque. The battery is an LFP type with a capacity of 45 kilowatt-hours. The BYD Dolphin boasts an impressive acceleration, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h in just 10.9 seconds, while its electric powertrain enables it to travel an estimated 291 km on a single charge.
