Although we previewed a glimpse of it in our publication earlier this week regarding the sounds of the brand new Formula E race cars, Jaguar today officially unveils its all-electric ‘I-TYPE’ to compete in the championship alongside battery manufacturer Panasonic.
Panasonic, a renowned leader in the electric vehicle (EV) industry and prominent supplier of battery cells to Tesla, announced its partnership with Jaguar to form the “Panasonic Jaguar Racing” team for the all-electric racing championship.
Adam Carroll and Mitch Evans will jointly drive the team, with Ho-Pin Tung serving as their reserve driver.
The team and vehicle are set to make their competitive debut in just a few weeks’ time as Season 3 of Formula E kicks off on October 9, 2016, in Hong Kong.
The all-new ‘I-TYPE’ will act as a testbed for Jaguar’s forthcoming electric vehicle technology. Since the past year, whispers have circulated about Jaguar’s intention to debut an all-electric sport utility vehicle by 2017 at the earliest.
Last month, a production-ready prototype of the all-electric F-Tempo was spotted in the wild, its camouflage-clad exterior providing a glimpse into the vehicle’s forthcoming design.
As the wait continues for Jaguar’s unveiling of its electric vehicle strategy, a glimmer of hope emerges with the brand’s triumphant return to motorsport through the Formula E all-electric championship.
