The iconic Toyota 4Runner, one of the most enduring SUV nameplates, introduces a significant revamp for its 2025 model year, boasting a comprehensive redesign. However, this premium feature is exclusively available on higher trim levels.
The non-hybrid 4Runner models are offered with a standard 2.7-liter inline-four engine, paired with a destination fee of $1,445. Meanwhile, the most affordable hybrid variant is the TRD Off-Road trim, priced from $43,440, inclusive of destination fees.
The TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited grades feature a hybrid powertrain, with the latter two available starting at $59,220 and $61,670 respectively as hybrid models. On the high-end trims – the Platinum, Trailhunter, and TRD Professional – it’s similarly common practice.
2025 Toyota 4Runner reveal
A hybrid powertrain combines a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, boosting output from 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet to deliver a more powerful driving experience. The hybrid configuration pairs seamlessly with its eight-speed automatic transmission, providing an estimated fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, both figures achieved with standard four-wheel drive capability.
This revised fuel efficiency represents a modest enhancement over the 22 mpg combined and 21 mpg combined ratings of non-hybrid models featuring rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, respectively. While some non-hybrid grades may exceed hybrid models’ freeway fuel efficiency. Toyota estimates the four-wheel-drive SR5, Sport, Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Off-Road Premium models to achieve 25 miles per gallon on the highway, while the rear-wheel-drive SR5, Sport, and Sport Premium models deliver an estimated 26 miles per gallon on the highway.
The 4Runner shares a virtually identical powertrain with its counterpart, the reinvigorated Toyota Land Cruiser, as well as their underlying architecture, both featuring Toyota’s robust TNGA-F platform. While the Land Cruiser typically features a hybrid powertrain, its base price of $57,900 exceeds the starting point for a 4Runner hybrid, which is available at a more affordable rate.
The Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser share a common output and gas financial system, yet each boasts substantial off-road capabilities thanks to their mechanical four-wheel drive systems. While the 4Runner offers more options than its counterpart, the Land Cruiser is only available in two trims for 2025.
With a duo of rugged Toyota hybrid SUVs now available for clients to choose from, the automaker is also heavily implying the arrival of an all-electric model through its Compact Cruiser EV and Land Cruiser SE concepts.
