Despite being an early innovator with the 2010 debut of the LEAF, Nissan’s next-generation electric vehicle (EV) didn’t arrive until more than a decade later, marking a significant gap in the company’s electrification efforts.

As a pioneer in the electric vehicle segment, the Nissan LEAF’s dominance in European sales was short-lived, eclipsed by innovative newcomers from industry leaders like Tesla, General Motors, Hyundai, Ford, and Volkswagen, among others.

Nissan launched its second electric vehicle, the Ariya, in 2020, a strategic move that marked the brand’s swift entry into the competitive market.

Despite numerous setbacks, the 2023 Nissan Ariya officially debuted last year, priced starting at $43,190, boasting an estimated range of 216 miles (up to 304 miles with the 87 kWh battery).

As the global automotive landscape shifted towards electrification at an unprecedented pace, Nissan accelerated its electric vehicle strategy to stay ahead of the curve. Nissan is gearing up to debut 19 new all-electric vehicles by 2030, a significant increase from its initial plan of 15 models.

At the Shanghai Auto Show, Nissan unveiled two electric vehicle concepts, including the innovative Arizon SUV, as part of its efforts to significantly reduce emissions across its entire product range.

Nissan’s Arizona: An Electric SUV Concept that Redefines the Future of Mobility?

Notwithstanding, Nissan unveiled a novel concept model, the Arizona idea, unseen before in its lineup. What’s the electric SUV designed to be? A versatile partner for Chinese drivers, offering an exhilarating experience.

The expertise boasts a bold and futuristic exterior design, anchored in the automaker’s innovative CMF-EV platform, a versatile foundation for a diverse range of electric vehicles.

The platform provides a remarkably low centre of gravity and features a roomy, pillar-free open-top interior design. With its advanced features, this vehicle boasts adjustable ambient lighting and an auto-dimming glass roof, elevating the driving experience to new heights.

The Arizona-based electric SUV boasts a cutting-edge, driver-focused design, featuring Eporo, a state-of-the-art digital personal assistant that not only provides accurate information but also seamlessly interacts with occupants.

Nissan unveils the Arion, a vehicle tailored to Chinese consumers seeking a bespoke driving experience, boasting cutting-edge connectivity and seamless integration capabilities. Additional particulars are anticipated.

As part of its ambitious strategy, Nissan is pioneering innovative electrical concepts that will revolutionize the automotive industry under its Ambition 2030 plan, aiming to achieve a 55% electrification sales mix by 2030 through an array of cutting-edge new EVs.

Electrek’s Take

While the Arizona concept appears to boast expansive, RAM-style openings, it’s difficult to assess its effectiveness without further context or details. The concept shares a resemblance with the Kia EV9 prototype.

Despite the trend towards sleeker designs, a rugged and capable off-road-ready electric vehicle could still hold significant appeal for Nissan’s brand identity.

At this juncture, it makes little sense to bring the AriZone to the US simultaneously with other markets outside of China. Further details will be forthcoming before we can proceed. Stay tuned for further updates on the Arizona concept.
