Chinese automaker Chery is poised to pioneer the global electric vehicle market by establishing a groundbreaking, large-scale all-solid-state battery production facility in Wuhu, Anhui Province. Containers bearing equipment arrived at the production facility’s website located within the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone on November 18, according to a report by Anhui Every Day.

The main area of the project spans 15 hectares (approximately 100,000 square meters). The industrial park, boasting state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology, is a collaborative endeavour between Anhui Anwa New Power Co., Ltd., featuring a capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours per year in its initial phase, with a total investment of 20 billion yuan, and expected to create over 3,000 jobs. Within the Wuhu Financial and Technological Growth Zone. Anhui Anwa New Power Expertise Co., Ltd.? Established in 2020, the company is jointly managed by Chery Holdings, with diverse stakeholders including GPSC from Thailand, Azeba from Japan, and Gotion Hello-Tech.

The location will maintain a 5 GWh solid-state battery R&D heart and a extremely built-in automated manufacturing line. With a design capacity of 1.25 gigawatt-hours, the primary manufacturing line boasts the distinction of being the world’s inaugural GWh-scale solid-state battery production facility, marking a significant milestone in the industry.

“With significant advantages over traditional batteries, solid-state batteries are not only safer but also more environmentally friendly, boasting a substantial increase in power density,” said Gao Lixin, general manager of Anhui Anwa New Power Technology Co., Ltd.

The manufacturing line is expected to commence operations within the next several months. The anticipated power density of the inaugural solid-state battery stands poised to surpass a remarkable 280 watt-hours per kilogram mark. A breakthrough battery technology, scheduled for launch in 2025, is expected to boast a remarkable power density of more than 400 watt-hours per kilogram. While advancements in solid-state battery technology continue, the next major breakthrough is expected to arrive in 2027, boasting a significant energy density boost of approximately 500 Wh per kilogram.

Anwa’s corporate is poised to streamline its battery production process, condensing it from 11 stages to a more efficient five-step operation. These steps eliminate the processes of baking, compaction, slitting, die-cutting, drying, and liquid injection. The process also involves the arid fabrication of both constructive and counteractive electrodes. The outcome yields a 30% reduction in investments tied up in fixed assets and a 20% decrease in energy costs for production.

Editor’s be aware:

If Cherry does indeed pioneer the establishment of such a manufacturing line, that would be a significant coup for the company. With numerous automotive giants, including Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz, actively pursuing the potential game-changer that is solid-state battery technology, significant investment dollars are being allocated. While established players like CATL continue to expand their reach and influence in the industry.

Beforehand, Chery unveiled solid-state battery technology and offered a glimpse into its innovative wagon concept designed to integrate this cutting-edge power source.
