The highly anticipated Volkswagen electric vehicle is set to hit the market in the next 12 months, marking a significant milestone for the German automaker’s transition into the world of sustainable transportation. Volkswagen unveiled the inaugural images of its ID.7 Tourer, a pioneering all-electric estate car.
The flagship ID.7 electric sedan is expanding its lineup with a new property model, or station wagon, catering to the needs of those in North America.
Following the launch of ID.7 production in August, Volkswagen initiated order taking for its second globally available MEB-based electric vehicle designed specifically for European customers shortly thereafter. The latest addition to Volkswagen’s expanding ID family is an electric sedan, marking the brand’s sixth model, alongside the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, and ID.Buzz electric van.
The Volkswagen ID.7 offers two trim levels: the base model, which starts at $62,000 (€56,995), and is capable of achieving up to 385 miles on a single charge according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).
The ID.7 Pro will debut later this year, boasting an enhanced 86 kWh battery pack, which enables an impressive driving range of up to 435 miles on a single charge. Volkswagen’s new electric sedan will begin rolling out in North America next year.
According to Volkswagen’s latest announcement on Monday, the ID.7 will now feature a station wagon variant.
Volkswagen provides a glimpse into the ID.7 Tourer’s sleek design with the release of its first official images.
The sleek and modern Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer preserves its aerodynamic silhouette, boasting a commendable 0.24 Cd, only slightly higher than the ID.7’s impressive 0.24 Cd.
Built upon Volkswagen’s MEB platform, the electric station wagon boasts a unique combination of brief overhangs and an extended wheelbase, yielding distinct design benefits.
Despite accommodating five occupants, the platform still offers an abundance of interior space, boasting a generous 19 cubic feet (545 liters) of cargo capacity. The 2023 Honda Pilot boasts a generous cargo capacity of 16.5 cubic feet, eclipsing the 2024 Ford Explorer’s 18.2 cu ft.
When the seats are folded down, the electric vehicle provides approximately 6.5 feet, or nearly two meters, of cargo space, offering a total volume of about 60.5 cubic feet (1,714 litres).
The ID.7 Tourer is set to join production alongside the ID.7 at Volkswagen’s Emden plant in Germany. While being the second MEB-based model built in northwest Germany is likely, the sentence structure could be clarified to ensure a clear and concise message.
The electric station wagon will hit European roads within the next 12 months. Volkswagen plans to release additional details, including uncamouflaged images, closer to the vehicle’s debut.
Electrek’s Take
Volkswagen’s ID.7 is engineered to deliver a serene and comfortable driving experience for everyday city travels. The station wagon’s versatility provides enhanced cargo capacity, making it an ideal choice for families or extended road trips.
Compared to simply offering another SUV, the ID.7 Tourer offers customers a more compelling alternative that appears to deliver greater efficiency. While no official statement has been made about bringing the electric station wagon to the US market, the imminent rollout of the ID.7 in the next year leaves room for possibility.
While SUVs and vans reign supreme in the US market, an all-electric station wagon may still find a niche among consumers seeking eco-friendly alternatives.
