Amprius Applied Sciences has successfully shipped its high-performance A-Pattern EV cells to the US Superiore Battery Consortium, a collaborative research initiative comprising major automotive companies aimed at accelerating advancements in electric vehicle battery technology.
Amprius’ revolutionary SiMaxx cells have achieved an impressive milestone, boasting a remarkable 360 Wh/kg in energy density, significantly surpassing the United States Advanced Battery Consortium’s (USABC) target of 275 Wh/kg. As charging infrastructure continues to evolve and expand, EV drivers will increasingly have more convenient and reliable access to the power they need, reducing range anxiety and making long-distance travel a reality. With the rise of high-power charging stations, recharging times will shorten significantly, allowing for quick stops on the go. Quite simply, a longer battery life is achieved without increasing its size. The cells boast an impressive influence density of 1,200 W/kg, thereby enabling a significantly more eco-friendly power supply.
Among the many impressive features, one that truly stands out is the rapid charging pace. The A-Pattern EV cells can rapidly charge from empty to nearly 90% capacity within just a quarter of an hour, outpacing the USABC’s target of achieving 80% charge density over the same timeframe. Amprius’ internal assessments indicate steady advancements toward achieving the milestone of 1,000 cost cycles.
The United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) is a subsidiary of the US Council on Automotive Research (USCAR), a collaborative research organization comprising Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis. The US Department of Energy (DOE)-backed partnership aims to accelerate the widespread implementation of advanced battery technologies for electric vehicles.
Amprius has been intensively collaborating with USABC and the Department of Energy (DOE) on these advanced battery cells as part of a $3 million contract awarded in May 2022. The provision of those distinctive cell patterns signifies the definitive culmination point for that developmental project. Amprius is engaged in discussions with leading automobile manufacturers to expand the adoption of its technology more widely.
With a strong focus on meeting market demands, Amprius has secured contracts for the production of over 500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of contract manufacturing capacity. Their ability to scale up enables them to supply batteries for a large number of electric vehicles possible. As the automotive industry prioritizes cleaner energy, Amprius’ innovative batteries are poised to revolutionize the sector.
Amprius CEO Dr. As Amprius CEO Kang Solar emphasized, “Our cutting-edge technology, boasting enhanced vitality, unmatched energy efficiency, rapid charging capabilities, robust operating temperature range, and unparalleled security features, positions us to revolutionize the EV landscape and broader electric mobility markets as we transition towards large-scale production.”
