A Toyota-Suzuki electric SUV is on the horizon for a 2025 launch.

Suzuki is set to commence production of an all-new electric SUV for Toyota at its Indian facility in Gujarat, starting from spring 2025.

Japanese automakers are teaming up with a brand-new electric vehicle as the flagship of their growing partnership, aiming to counter the surge of innovative models flooding the market. At a press conference on Wednesday, Toyota and Suzuki jointly announced that their latest SUV model was specifically conceived as an all-electric vehicle (BEV), with no plans to offer gasoline-powered or hybrid variants.

Toyota’s latest electric vehicle might just be a nimble SUV boasting the sharp, agile handling characteristics typically associated with battery-electric vehicles.

The new vehicle is likely to be underpinned by a collaborative platform developed jointly by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor, which will amalgamate the strengths of each partner.

Toyota’s President, Koji Sato, declared: “Through synergies generated by our jointly developed battery-electric vehicle unit and platform, we’re poised to take a pioneering leap forward in our shared pursuit of innovative electrification solutions.”

The electric SUV is expected to offer a four-wheel-drive option, which will provide distinct drivability on challenging terrain and an even more engaging driving experience.

In February, Maruti Suzuki revealed the concept for its first electric vehicle, the eVX, a midsize electric SUV capable of traveling up to 342 miles on a single charge. This glimpse offers a first look at the brand’s latest mannequin design.

Here is the improved text in a different style:

The eVX measures 4,300 millimeters in length, 1,800 millimeters in width, and 1,600 millimeters in height, making it only slightly larger than BYD’s Atto 3 (4,455 mm long x 1,875 mm wide x 1,615 mm tall) or a Toyota C-HR (4,460 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, 1,620 mm tall).

Toyota plans to globally debut its latest model among a lineup of ten electric vehicles (EVs) expected to hit the market by 2026. Toyota is reportedly strengthening its alliance with Subaru by planning the launch of another jointly developed electric SUV in 2026, following a recent report.

Subaru announced its partnership with Toyota to co-develop and release three new electric SUV models by 2026. At the corporate helm, CEO Atsushi Osaki cautioned, “We face significant risks if we pursue this path independently.”

Electrek’s Take

Japanese major carmakers are joining forces to debut innovative electric models amid ongoing challenges posed by increasingly affordable alternatives from Chinese manufacturers.

As China’s electric vehicle (EV) market, the global leader, becomes increasingly saturated with innovative trends, manufacturers are expanding their reach overseas to fuel future growth and innovation.

One of the most crucial notes is that China’s largest automaker, BYD, stands out. China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer BYD reported robust quarterly earnings, buoyed by a surge in automotive sales during the third quarter. For the first time, BYD’s revenue surpassed that of Tesla, driven by strong demand for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Toyota’s production plummeted for the first time in four years during the first half of its 2024 fiscal year. Toyota’s sales volume in China suffered a notable decline, plummeting 17% as the automaker struggled to regain its footing amidst a challenging market.

Toyota has sold 108,287 electric vehicles (EVs), including those from its luxury brand Lexus, during the first nine months of 2024. Among the vast majority of approximately 7.4 million cars available at that time, just a minuscule fraction – roughly 1.5 percent – was electric. BYD delivered 164,956 electric vehicles (EVs) in September, marking a significant milestone amidst its accelerating growth trajectory; the company has already offered nearly 1.2 million units this year.

Toyota’s strategic alliance with Suzuki and Subaru could prove crucial in maintaining its market lead. Remark under and tell us your ideas.
