Aion EV hatchback exposed as it prepares to take on Europe

On October 31st, a compact GAC EV model Aion hatchback emerged online, sparking interest and curiosity about its features and specifications. Dubbed AY2, the automotive marks the second model to adopt a global design concept, building on the success of its predecessor, the second-generation Aion V introduced earlier this year.

The life-size prototype of the innovative electric vehicle is scheduled to make its global premiere at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November, with a potential European market launch planned for 2025. Based on the visual representations, these images appear intended for utilization in a forthcoming Ministry of Trade and Digital Knowledge report, specifically the MIIT.

The striking new car’s entrance lights are remarkably unique, resembling eyelids in their fluid motion. Below lie supplementary moderate resources arranged in a pattern resembling the Chinese character Tian (), which symbolizes rice cultivation and discipline. Beneath the car’s fender lies a vital air intake, allowing for smooth airflow and optimal engine performance.

The charging port is situated on the correct flank of the vehicle, where it is easily accessible; meanwhile, the AY2 option features discreet, semi-recessed door handles that strike a thoughtful balance between aerodynamic considerations and affordability. The photographs showcase the automotive featuring at least two distinct types of alloys, which exude a playful aesthetic.

As the car’s design reaches its climax, the roofline terminates in a striking spoiler, while the tail lights employ the iconic Tian character, potentially hinting at the vehicle’s mysterious moniker.

While the automotive’s performance in this price range may not receive much attention, it is expected to rival other vehicles priced around 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,050), including the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, and the Volkswagen ID.3.

The AY2 is expected to ride on the same AEP pure electric digital platform employed by the next-generation Aion V. This marks the debut of a 400V architecture, leveraging silicon carbide for enhanced performance, with the option to pair it with a lithium iron phosphate battery that supports 3C rapid charging capabilities.

Plans are set forth for the production and wholesale distribution of one million Aion vehicles by the year 2025. The launch of a brand-new automotive model marks a significant milestone for GAC as it continues to strive towards its ambitious goals. Last year, Aion launched a manufacturing facility in Thailand and is currently developing another in Indonesia. Until recently, the model was exclusively available in China but has now launched a bold export strategy. As one of the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers, the company stands as the third-largest producer globally, following closely behind industry giants Tesla and BYD.
