AESC, the leading battery technology agency, has teamed up with renowned automaker BMW to mark a significant milestone – the groundbreaking of a state-of-the-art 30 GWh EV battery production facility in Florence County, South Carolina.

The development of a 1.5 million-square-foot facility is currently underway, with a projected completion date of 2026. The proposed $800 million electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing facility is expected to generate 1,170 new job opportunities for local residents.

AES Corporation already operates an electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in Tennessee, as pictured above, and is developing another such facility in Kentucky. Once all three US factories operated by AESC are fully operational, the combined capacity will reach approximately 70 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually.

AESC, a leading battery manufacturer, announced in October 2022 that it had formed a multi-year partnership with the BMW Group, under which AESC will supply batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) produced at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, facility.

According to AESC, their innovative battery design is expected to yield a 20% increase in energy density, accompanied by reduced charging times and enhanced performance featuring a 30% boost in range and efficiency.

AESC reports that its manufacturing unit in Florence is expected to be fully powered by renewable energy. Companions can collaborate on initiatives that harness renewable energy, deploy effective carbon management strategies, utilize cutting-edge software to optimize resource allocation, and develop circular economy solutions by recycling electric vehicle batteries. The company also claims to utilize reliable sources – specifically, the Inflation Reduction Act-authorized – for battery procurement.

South Carolina’s Division of Commerce is actively developing the state’s electric vehicle (EV) and EV battery manufacturing sectors, with positive outcomes emerging from these efforts.
