Riding the Ride1Up Roadster V3: A Masterclass in Electric Bike Design?

Ride1Up Roadster V3 review: Now THIS is how you build an electric bike!

In North America, regulations governing electric bicycles (e-bikes) allow for a higher power output of up to 750W, leading to the emergence of a vast array of high-performance e-bikes. Notwithstanding this, a shift towards the heavier end of the spectrum is underway nonetheless. As a welcome respite from the relentless pursuit of speed, after thoroughly testing the lightweight Ride1Up Roadster V3 for several weeks, I’m delighted to shift gears and embark on a more leisurely, eco-friendly adventure reminiscent of a bygone era when life was simpler.

Mild and environment friendly

The Ride1Up Roadster V3 appears to revive the essence of traditional cycling while incorporating the benefits of an electric bike. You’re accustomed to unwieldy power and unbridled speed, having traded it for a motorcycle that evokes memories of your parents’ vintage rides, or at least what mine used to be.

The unassuming diamond-shaped frame boasts sleek, expertly crafted welds as its primary visual appeal, its understated design lacking any overt flourishes beyond its utilitarian simplicity. While at first glance you may not notice many significant advancements, a closer examination reveals numerous substantial improvements.

The electric powertrain has undergone a comprehensive overhaul compared to the Roadster’s previous iteration. This time, we’ve acquired a brand-new Mivice motor, representing a significant upgrade in terms of its superior quality and performance. I recently toured the Mivice production facility and was impressed by their unwavering commitment to precision and exceptional manufacturing standards.

The bike benefits significantly from Mivice’s advanced torque sensor and controller, as well as premium electronics. While 500W may seem modest compared to modern e-bikes boasting similar power, it proves surprisingly potent on this lightweight frame. Since the bike’s primary purpose is commuting, its performance profile will focus on efficiency and practicality rather than raw speed or agility.

The battery will experience a substantial enhancement, boasting a remarkable 50% increase in capacity. The newly launched 360Wh battery offers an impressive range of approximately 40 miles (64 km) when using pedal assist, except for occasional brief sprints at speeds up to 28 mph (45 km/h).

When you engage the brand-new throttle seamlessly integrated into the handlebars, you may find that a range of approximately 15-20 miles can be achieved under less-than-ideal conditions, with potential for greater distances if you ride more slowly or efficiently with periodic pedaling. For me, one of the most enjoyable ways to ride a bike is by striking a balance between using the throttle and getting assistance from pedaling. The torque sensor enables seamless pedaling, but on occasion, the throttle becomes a welcome relief when energy levels are low.

I’m pleased to note that the battery boasts UL certification, a crucial indicator of safety and security for many cyclists seeking reassurance that their power source meets rigorous standards.

A major innovation has been introduced to pedal-driven transmissions, pitting two well-established options against each other. I’ve been evaluating the single-speed belt drive configuration utilizing a Dayco belt, but an alternative option is available in the form of a 10-speed setup featuring a Shimano Deore transmission.

While I have a fondness for single-speed e-bikes, likely due to my flat coastal surroundings, many users might find a single gear ratio restrictive, especially when tackling steep inclines. When seeking to downshift into a lower gear, the throttle proves particularly useful; conversely, I reckon the belt drive will suffice for most people. While it’s true that a 10-speed option exists for those requiring more flexibility in their gear shifts.

People expect a superior-quality transmission, not just some basic hardware that simply meets the requirement. The Shimano Deore configuration tends to stay in tune longer, ultimately leading to significantly reduced maintenance requirements over time; conversely, the belt drive option presents an even lower upkeep scenario.

With the inclusion of hydraulic disc brakes, maintenance is significantly simplified as there’s no need to regularly adjust brake cables due to stretching. While hydraulic brakes generally require minimal maintenance until the brake pads eventually wear out and need replacement, mechanical disc brakes necessitate more frequent attention before reaching this point. While it’s unlikely that most cyclists will need to prime or replace fluid in the near future, this maintenance task is essential to ensure optimal performance and prolong the lifespan of certain components.

For just $1,295, you’re getting an unparalleled level of value that’s simply unmatched. This e-bike offers an impressive combination of features at an unbeatable value: a lightweight design, torque sensor technology, and speeds of up to 28 mph, all backed by the reputation of a prominent manufacturer. Throw in key security compliance and free shipping, and you’ve got a deal that’s hard to pass up.

The truth is that this e-bike stands out with its three available body sizes and two unique color options, offering unparalleled customization at an affordable price point, setting it apart from other commuter e-bikes in the same category.

While no e-bike is perfect, the Ride1Up Roadster V3 still has its unique strengths. Here are a few of your concerns:

There’s a lot to consider when choosing an e-bike. The Ride1Up Roadster V3 has some notable downsides to think about: its battery life, which maxes out at 45 miles, is relatively short; it doesn’t have a throttle, so you’ll need to pedal to get started; the lack of suspension can make for a bumpy ride on rough terrain.

While I’ve always appreciated the lightweight feel of the Roadster collection, I was surprised to discover that the V3 model gained a bit of bulk this time around? While weighing in at 39 pounds, this e-bike is remarkably lightweight compared to its peers on the market; however, the previous model tipped the scales at an impressive 5 pounds less, making the older version’s reduced weight more noticeable when carrying it up stairs or onto public transportation, for instance?

However, I am familiar with the origin of this weight, and I have come to accept its presence. I previously yearned for a bike with an upgrade option for additional battery power, as well as removable batteries for increased flexibility; integrated LED lights for enhanced visibility; attachable or detachable fenders for added protection; and various customization options to further optimize its functionality. Now that they’ve provided all this information, can I really lament the weighty nature of these components?

The bike’s lack of suspension is a significant drawback, as it can lead to jarring and uncomfortable rides, particularly for individuals with back issues or spinal degeneration, who may not have the same vertebral integrity as they did in their youth. Certain, I perceive that. With the vast array of e-bikes available today, individuals can conveniently find one that aligns with their unique preferences and riding style, making for a more enjoyable experience. That’s patently not a motorcycle designed for someone requiring thicker tyres and integrated suspension, to say the least. A bike designed for the urban warrior: a rugged commuter with a seat tailored for riders accustomed to navigating challenging terrain, yet still offering a smooth ride for those seeking a break from the daily grind.

The Ride1Up Roadster V3 offers a compelling option for those seeking a lightweight and moderately powerful e-bike that also delivers impressive value-for-money features.

While it won’t match the caliber of Specialized or Trek, this bike offers good quality components at a fraction of their price.

With its thoughtful design and impressive performance, the bike stands out as a rare gem in an industry where cost-cutting often takes precedence over craftsmanship. The bike glides effortlessly with no need for hands on the handlebars, a testament to its well-crafted geometry and thoughtful design.

While some might find the bike’s modest power levels lacking, particularly those accustomed to maximizing North American e-bikes’ efficiency limits, I’m content with moderate energy and torque for a leisurely commute that prioritizes relaxation over speed. Several e-bike models boast enhanced power and extended battery life; it’s crucial to choose the right one if you’re seeking this feature. The Ride1Up Roadster V3 bike is designed to impress riders who value sleek aesthetics, clever features, and exceptional value above all else.
