Volkswagen is issuing a recall affecting approximately 24,000 ID.4 electric vehicles in the United States. The recall concerns a lack of fireproofing on the interior sunshade of the ID.4.
Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric SUV has been subject to a recall over concerns about its braking system. The issue reportedly affects around 12,000 units worldwide.
Volkswagen has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will initiate a recall on select 2023-2024 ID.4 models, starting with notification issued on Thursday.
After Volkswagen became aware of the issue resulting from an internal investigation into failures in Coulomb’s technology, it reached out to the supplier for further explanation and clarity. Despite extensive testing over several months, no underlying cause was identified.
The matter was referred to the Volkswagen Product Security Committee on September 8, requesting further clarification regarding the issue.
In an abundance of caution, on November 1, Volkswagen decided to undertake a non-compliance recall due to concerns that the interior sunshade above the glass roof may not meet adequate fire-retardancy standards.
The ID.4 may struggle to conform to federal regulations regarding the flammability of interior materials as outlined in FMVSS 302.
Volkswagen has announced that it will rectify the issue by installing flame-retardant materials in sunshades at no additional expense to customers. No components want changing. Notified ID.4 homeowners are expected to receive a mailed notification starting January 5, 2024. Since the vehicle falls within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, VW will not offer a reimbursement plan.
You can reach out to Volkswagen’s customer support by calling 1-800-VW-CARE (1-800-892-2273). The recall quantity is 60G3.

Volkswagen has resolved the issue on its production line as of August 1, 2023, with no effects on upcoming models.
Volkswagen sold more than 10,000 ID.4 models in the United States during the third quarter, totaling 27,155 units as of September.
Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric vehicle has undergone multiple recalls in recent times. Last year, Volkswagen issued a recall affecting around 21,000 ID.4 electric vehicles due to an issue causing energy loss while in operation. The sellers updated the High-Voltage (HV) battery management unit and pulse inverter unit software programs to address the issue. That recall quantity was 97ZZ.
