Tesla gives an update on Powershare: Cybertruck powering your house

Tesla Cybertruck Powershare Set up

Tesla has issued a recall for its Powerwall product, allowing Cybertruck owners to power their homes, as some property owners have encountered significant delays.

Tesla’s Cybertruck marks its debut as the company’s first officially designed vehicle capable of bi-directional charging, allowing it to dispatch electrical energy to various entities, such as another electric vehicle, a home, or virtually any compatible device.

Tesla refers to its residential power-sharing system as “Powerwall” rather than “Powershare”, allowing homeowners to seamlessly integrate their Tesla Cybertruck’s battery into their residence for off-grid and backup power capabilities during outages or when the grid is down.

Despite having delivered the Cybertruck for nearly a year, the rollout of PowerShare has faced challenges since it was introduced as an optional feature on most Cybertruck Base Models.

Despite Tesla’s Powerwall setup being complete for many Cybertruck owners, numerous complaints have emerged that the features are not functioning as intended.

While it’s not entirely Tesla’s responsibility, as local electrical utilities also play a role in approving systems before connection, there is evidence that Tesla failed to complete certain software and protocols in some cases.

Tesla’s practice of shipping products without completed software is no longer uncommon. The Tesla Cybertruck has just started to receive its Supervised Full Self-Driving capability over the past fortnight, roughly a year after initial deliveries commenced.

Tesla has introduced a revamp of its Powerwall timeline, enabling PowerSharing capabilities tailored to various configuration scenarios.

  • Enabling PowerShare on your Cybertruck may take up to a week.
  • When you have solar power installed on your home’s backup circuit, Powershare is activated at the start of each year.
  • When enabled by the end of the year in a designated utility via an authorized backup change, Powershare can be activated.
  • By mid-2025, Powerwall owners will have the option to activate Powershare.

Tesla reportedly intends to release most configurations by year-end, although those pairing PowerShare with a PowerWall, its residential battery unit already performing a similar function, are advised to await next year’s rollout.
