Lexus is expanding its hybrid offerings by introducing the technology to its ES luxury crossover lineup.

The 2025 Lexus LX 700h is the latest iteration of Toyota’s luxurious flagship SUV. The hybrid variant is propelled by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V-6 engine, paired with an electric motor positioned between the powerplant and the shared 10-speed automatic transmission used in non-hybrid LX models. The LX Hybrid model also retains its sibling’s four-wheel-drive system, specifically designed for off-road adventures, with a distinctive 2-speed transfer case.

Similar to its larger counterparts, the Toyota Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV, the LX shares its foundation with the same GA-F body-on-frame architecture. However, the Lexus SUV’s horsepower will rise by 20 due to its ability to ingest premium gasoline. The torque output remains consistent across all three vehicles at a robust 583 pound-feet. Like the iconic Toyota Camry models.

The all-new Lexus LX 600 is set to debut in 2025, featuring a unique offering: a non-hybrid variant powered by a potent standalone twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine, producing an impressive 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The manufacturer expects only minor differences in fuel efficiency between the two models, projecting 19 mpg combined for the LX 600 and similar figures for the LX 700h. The Lexus ES offers a maximum towing capacity of up to 8,000 pounds across all trim levels.

Noteworthy is that Lexus opted to retain a conventional starter motor and alternator instead of relying on the hybrid system’s electrical motor and battery pack to generate power, unlike its other hybrid models. To mitigate the risk of hybrid system failure, Lexus implemented a backup solution for its LX model, particularly in light of its intended use in remote regions where assistance may be limited.

The hybrid model’s various configurations incorporate additional chassis strengthening measures, which Lexus asserts amplify overall structural stiffness and precision in steering response. The engine mounts and radiator assistance have been bolstered, while a fresh crossmember and reconfigured spare-tire setup enable accommodation of the rear-mounted battery pack. The 12-volt battery was relocated to the rear of the vehicle from its previous position in the engine compartment, while both it and the instrument panel were equipped with dedicated structural reinforcement.

The 2025 Lexus LX 700h is slated for a release at the beginning of 2025, with pricing details to be disclosed closer to its market debut. It brings Lexus closer to offering a hybrid variant for every vehicle in its U.S. lineup. If Toyota were to consider discontinuing pure gasoline-powered car sales in the US – a notion its chief scientist, Gill Pratt, has hinted they are currently exploring – a lineup adjustment would be necessary.
