Hyundai accelerated the development process within a remarkably brief 18-month period, expediting production as it seeks to capitalize on its early mover advantage in the burgeoning market for US-assembled electric vehicles.

Hyundai announced that its Savannah plant has begun producing passenger vehicles ahead of schedule after verifying its manufacturing processes to meet the company’s rigorous standards. The news was shared through a statement released by the automaker on Friday.

The highly anticipated facility marks a significant achievement for both Hyundai and the state of Georgia, serving as the largest economic development project in the state’s history to date.

Hyundai’s initial investment of $5 billion ultimately blossomed into a substantial commitment of $7.6 billion. Recently, the automaker has bolstered its US presence by adding its 18th supplier to support the rapid growth of its American operations. Hyundai’s expansion is expected to generate an additional 8,500 jobs in the region.

Another $5 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery plant is under development in Bartow County through a partnership with SK On, which will create an additional 3,500 jobs.

Since 2018, a staggering $28 billion has been committed to investing in Georgia’s burgeoning clean energy sector, with a focus on electrifying transportation infrastructure, innovative battery technology, and other environmentally friendly projects. To date, these initiatives have created more than 36,000 new employment opportunities within the state.

According to an examination, Hyundai’s Georgia EV plant is expected to generate more than 58,200 new job opportunities. This initiative will attract more than $12.6 billion in investments.

Later this year, Hyundai will debut its inaugural all-electric, three-row SUV, the IONIQ 9, which was recently spotted undergoing testing in the United States. The Hyundai Group has announced plans to manufacture its larger electric SUV model concurrently with the 2025 IONIQ 5 in Georgia, USA.

Hyundai announced that electric vehicles manufactured at its plant are eligible for a partial $3,750 federal tax credit. As soon as the battery plant opens, Hyundai anticipates that US-manufactured electric vehicles will qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

By 2025, Hyundai will offer the IONIQ 5 in a ruggedized XRT trim, catering to outdoor enthusiasts seeking an all-electric adventure vehicle.

The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5’s features and options will depend on the specific trim level chosen. The base SE model starts at an estimated $41,000 and comes with a standard battery that offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 300 miles on a single charge. As you move up to higher trims like the SEL ($45,500) or Limited ($50,000), you’ll gain access to more advanced safety features such as forward collision avoidance and lane departure warning. The top-of-the-line Ultimate trim starts at an estimated $54,000 and adds even more premium touches like a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
