The GAC Aion’s RT all-electric sedan is poised for rapid commercialization. The official unveiling of the new device was preceded by a surprise reveal from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which took place earlier this month, followed swiftly by the formal launch announcement. As of September 26, the automobile became available for pre-order across four trim levels, priced between 119,800 and 169,800 yuan ($17,100 to $24,200). The official Chinese name for this dinosaur is indeed known as Velociraptor. As the Aion RT hits the market, it will immediately compete with stylish models like the Xpeng Mona M03.
With its midsize sedan profile, the Aion RT is built around the AEP 3.0 pure electric powertrain and boasts dimensions of 4,865mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, with a substantial 2,775mm wheelbase for added stability and comfort on the road. The exterior design of this brand-new power sedan is customarily impressive on the Chinese market, featuring a sleek, closed-face front fascia, razor-sharp LED headlights, inconspicuous door handles, and distinctive through-type taillights that exude a sense of dynamism.
Moreover, the Aion RT is equipped with a 126-line variable-focus lidar, three millimeter-wave radars, and 11 cameras, paired with a NVIDIA Orin X autonomous driving chip, capable of comprehending end-to-end assisted driving capabilities on highways and concrete roads without requiring high-precision maps, in accordance with official specifications.
The system’s advanced driving features incorporate sophisticated obstacle detection and mitigation capabilities.
The cockpit’s vibrant orange hue provides a striking backdrop for a carefully crafted blend of technology and minimalism, featuring an 8.8-inch instrument panel and a prominent 14.6-inch central management display powered by the ADiGO 5.0 system, accompanied by a thoughtful selection of physical buttons and 11 speakers that harmonize to create an immersive audio experience.
The interior features a vast expanse of luxurious packaging, boasting seats packed with double-layered, high-density sponges, according to the manufacturer’s claims. Two sleek, expansive electrical panoramic sunroofs allow for a seamless blend of style and functionality.
The adjustable entrance seats conveniently fold down at the touch of a single button. The trunk’s capacity is approximately 540 liters, allowing for the storage of four 24-inch suitcases and one 20-inch case. The rear headroom measures a generous 940 millimetres, while the legroom stretches out to an impressive 943 millimetres.
The Aion RT offers two distinct energy variants: 150 kW (201 horsepower) and 165 kW (221 horsepower), both powered by an electric motor at the front. The lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack is supplied by a collaboration between CATL-GAC, offering users two capacity options: 55.1 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 68.1 kWh, corresponding to respective driving ranges of approximately 520 kilometres (km) and 650 km under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). The estimated energy consumption per unit distance is approximately 11.7 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers.
According to GAC Aion, the car’s advanced 400V silicon carbide technology enables rapid charging: it takes only 10 minutes to replenish a 200 km range, and 18 minutes to recharge the battery by 50%.
