More than a year since traditional automakers switched from the Combined Charging System (CCS) to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), General Motors’ electric vehicle customers can now purchase an approved adapter, gaining access to hundreds of thousands of Tesla charging stations.

Long-awaited news has finally arrived for owners of General Motors’ electric vehicles. The US automotive industry has taken a significant step forward in adopting a widely standardised charging plug.

By mid-2023, General Motors led the pack of original equipment manufacturers in abandoning its customary Charge Cord Connectivity (CCS) plug for Tesla’s novel Automated Charging System (NACS). Future battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are expected to natively support this port, while existing models may utilize an adapter for access to the charging network.

Since then, almost all major automakers have joined the New Alliance Charging Solution (NACS) initiative, securing permitted Tesla adapters alongside brands like Ford, Hyundai, BMW, and Lucid Motors.

US charging networks, such as ChargePoint, are now introducing solutions to support electric vehicles (EVs) of all makes and models, enhancing the versatility of local networks and alleviating stressors faced by EV drivers when they need to charge their vehicles but lack compatible plugs or access to specific networks.

As Tesla prepares for forthcoming GM fashions equipped with integrated NACS plugs, it is now marketing an authorized adapter allowing EV owners to gain immediate access to a vast network of Level 2 and DC fast chargers currently available on the Tesla platform.

The GM-approved Tesla NACS adapter is now available to purchase for a limited time at $225.

General Motors has launched an initiative that enables owners of certain GM models to purchase a compatible NACS adapter through their vehicle’s app, granting access to Tesla’s extensive and reliable Supercharger network across the US at this time.

The NACS adapter enables General Motors customers to access nearly 232,000 public charging stations, including 17,800 Tesla Superchargers. Wade Sheffer, Vice Chairman of GM Power, took to the stage.

As part of our commitment to accelerating the transition to an all-electric future, General Motors’ sustained initiatives to support the expansion of public charging infrastructure are crucial. GM is focused on further boosting customer experience by expanding public access to quick chargers, a crucial step in making the switch to electric vehicles even smoother for drivers.

Pursuant to General Motors’ guidance, electric vehicle (EV) owners across its portfolio of brands will have the opportunity to acquire the Tesla adapter through their specific mobile applications at a price point of $225. Using the app, they will locate the nearest accessible Tesla Supercharger, view its status in real-time, estimate the cost of their session, and proceed with payment.

Eligible customers are assured seamless charging capabilities with every Tesla adapter, designed to facilitate effortless plug-ins at any station adhering to the North American Charging Standard. The US-based automotive manufacturer is partnering with multiple suppliers to ensure a steady supply chain, thereby enabling widespread availability for all those seeking to purchase one.
