On September 26, Dongfeng’s sub-brand Forthing unveiled its latest offering, the Xinghai S7, a cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) sedan-hatchback hybrid. Despite its larger size compared to the XPeng G3, Dongfeng’s claims suggest it views the Xpeng G3 as a competitor, with the smaller SUV likely seen as a key rival in the market. Three routes offer different travel experiences, each spanning an impressive 555 kilometers in length. Priced from 119,800 to a maximum of 139,800 yuan (approximately $17,100 to $19,950 USD). The variations are as follows:
Mild version | 119,800 (17,100 USD) |
Pleasure edtion | 129,800 (18,500 USD) |
Luxurious version | 139,800 (19,950 USD) |
These costs bear striking similarities to those of the Xpeng G9 (formerly known as the Mona M03). Furthermore, automakers have blurred the lines between hatchbacks and sedans by introducing liftback models that seamlessly combine the best of both worlds. Prior to the release of the Mona M03, manufacturers touted its record-low drag coefficient of 0.194, which supposedly made it the most aerodynamically efficient mass-produced hatchback on the market. However, this claim has been recently eclipsed by the Xinghai S7, whose engineers have reportedly achieved a Cd value of just 0.191. The design specifications for the S7’s underbody are tailored to accommodate a high-volume production run of an automobile, ensuring a sturdy foundation that meets the demands of mass manufacturing.
Here are the measurements of the Dongfeng Forthing Xinghai S7: the length, width, height, and wheelbase measure 4,935/1,915/1,495 mm, respectively. The automotive’s exterior features a distinctive, closed-off grille on its entrance. The car’s headlights are similar to those found on other Forthing models, bearing a resemblance to the shape of the number seven. Indeed, numerous design elements contribute to minimizing the drag coefficient, including discreetly integrated door handles and aerodynamically optimized wheel covers. The automaker offers its latest model featuring either 19- or 20-inch wheel options on the market.
From the B-pillar, the roofline curves downwards in a near-coupe-like manner. Customers can choose from five distinct hues for the S7, including Smoke and Rain Blue, Blue Wave Green, Cloud White, Purple Cloud Purple, and Deep Black.
The tailgate terminates in a sleek ducktail design, featuring an electrically operated system typical of its era. Despite its larger size compared to the Xpeng Mona M03, the car’s trunk capacity is noticeably smaller, boasting just 541 liters in comparison to the Xpeng’s 621 liters. When the seats are folded down, this vehicle’s cargo capacity expands to an impressive 1,303 litres. There’s additionally a frunk.
Crafted with elegance, the interior is available in two sophisticated hues: Oriental White and Sky Twilight Black. The vehicle’s interior features a prominent 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and a concise 8.8-inch driver information display. The infotainment system operates using the Xinghai OS platform, designed to seamlessly respond to intuitive gestures and clear, concise voice commands. This sleek device also provides seamless connectivity with its built-in 4G capabilities and the ability to share your data plan as a reliable Wi-Fi hotspot.
The vehicle features standard synthetic leather seats equipped with a heated function. Does the top-tier design boast a state-of-the-art 12-speaker sound system? In reality, rear-seat passengers often fall short in terms of creature comforts. While the rear seats offer a fixed recline, some users might find this setup less than ideal.
The electric vehicle’s propulsion system relies on a powerful 160 kilowatt electrical motor situated at the rear axle. With its impressive 310 Nm of torque, this vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 6.67 seconds. The 56.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack powers the electric motor. As discussed previously, this vehicle boasts an impressive CLTC range of approximately 555 kilometres. Reports suggest the possibility of an EREV model to follow in the future.
The vehicle is equipped with an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) that incorporates cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and millimeter-wave radar technologies. This advanced driver-assistance system enables seamless integration of high-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping support, and intelligent lane-centering capabilities.
It was widely publicized that Dongfeng showcased its Forthing model at the IAA Munich exhibition in 2023.
